Our story of neighbours from hell

Homeowner NFH

We own a semi-detached house in London and have done for about 3 years. for the first 2 years we had no problems with the neighbours. They were respectful and we communicated to each other about noise.

Last year they moved and a young couple with three young kids moved in. I know kids can be loud, no biggie. We have a dog who can also be loud on occasion.

As soon as they move in, literally not a few hours after, we hear both a piano, guitar and drum kit within the space of an hour. It turns out the kids all played these instruments, and even better, they'd put them all against the joining wall in the front room, so we could hear them in every single room in our house.

Now I'm not against instruments, I play the piano myself. But to put the instruments on a joining wall? Surely everyone knows you don't do that?!

Anyway for the next few weeks, it was a living hell. Every single day we'd hear instruments from as early as 7am, even on Sundays. To make matters worse, we both work night jobs. So sleep was impossible. And if you did try and relax you'd just hear constant noise. To make matters worse, they slam every single door in the house and just constantly bang against the walls for some reason.

After a few months of trying to put up with it, we both finally snapped and approached them about it. We were extremely polite when speaking to them and just tried to explain that we worked nights and if they moved the instruments into another room we wouldn't be able to hear them. This was absolutely pointless, Instead of listening to us they just said "well they're really good on the instruments aren't they?" (they aren't lol, they just press random keys on the keyboard for hours on end) and then kinda gave us a half arsed apology.

It's still really bad, and we know that if we approach them again if could get even worse. I just can't understand why anyone would think it's okay to start letting their kids play instruments extremely early in the morning.

If anyone has any advice on how we could approach this moving forward that would be great... but I fully understand the only real solution we have is to move!
