12 records fell at 5A district track meet. Here’s them all, plus who’s going to state

Centennial senior Kai Twaddle-Dunham tested the limits of Middleton High School’s discus venue Friday evening.

As one of the top throwers in the nation this season, the Vikings’ grass field was just long enough to accommodate his record-breaking performance.

Twaddle-Dunham set a new meet record with a throw of 200 feet, 3 inches on the second day of the 5A District Three Track and Field Championships. It is the eighth-best mark in the country this season. He also broke the district shot put record on Thursday with a heave of 61-7.

Aside from the collective gasp from the crowd watching, Twaddle-Dunham hardly flinched when the meet official announced his record distance on his final attempt in the prelims. The previous meet record was set in 1977 by Boise’s Paul Dilulo (184-5). All but one of Twaddle-Dunham’s throws Friday surpassed Dilulo’s record.

“That’s him. He’s just very relaxed, very chill, and doesn’t get excited,” Centennial head coach Joel Segraves said. “I mean, that was more excitement than I’ve seen out of him just about ever. He hit 61-7 in the shot yesterday and did a little bit of a fist pump and a little bit of sound and that’s about it.”

It’s hard to believe how far Twaddle-Dunham has come in just a few years. As a freshman in 2021, his best throw in the discus was 95-10. Even last season, when he placed second at state in both the shot put and discus, his best discus mark was 175-9.

“I didn’t know how to throw it right,” said Twaddle-Dunham, who has signed with Washington State. “So freshman year, sophomore year, I didn’t really like it at all. Then last year is when I started actually getting into it.”

Twaddle-Dunham said improved footwork and countless reps have helped him climb the national ranks this season.

“He’s a hard worker and he loves to throw,” Centennial throws coach Charlie Ruff said. “We spend two or three hours each day in the summer getting ready to go to meets. He’d just be out there throwing and just keep going and going and going. He wouldn’t stop.

“I’d be like, ‘Are you tired yet?’ And he’d say, ‘No, I’ve got another couple in me.’ ”

Boise happens to be home to two of the best discus throwers in the country this season. Bishop Kelly senior Rakeem Johnson, who has signed to play football for Michigan State, owns the No. 5 mark with his toss of 201-4 at the Boise City Meet on May 1.

Johnson competes in the 4A classification, so the two won’t go head-to-head at state, but they have faced off in three meets this spring. Twaddle-Dunham bested Johnson at the Patriot Invite and the Bandanna Invitational, while Johnson won the Boise City Meet.

“Even though we aren’t going neck-and-neck at state, it’s still fun to see who’s gonna end up on top (of the rankings),” Twaddle-Dunham said.

MORE DISTRICT RECORDS FALL

Twaddle-Dunham wasn’t the only athlete to put his name in the record book at the 5A district championships. Here’s a rundown of the other record-breaking performances:

Capital sophomore Christine Huckins broke the girls 100-meter record in Thursday’s prelims and bettered her own performance in winning Friday’s final in 11.74 seconds. She then added the 200 record (24.21), and joined teammates Grace Russell, Stella Gray and Kennedy Patterson in winning the girls 4x100 relay in record time (47.46).

“It feels really good, because we’ve all been working so hard at practice,” Huckins said. “We all just wanted this so badly, and to get a big personal record and have the fastest time in (state) history, it was crazy for us.”

Montana signee Sophia Clark won a state title in the girls 400 last year. The Boise senior will be hard to catch after running a personal-best 55.75 in the event Friday, surpassing the previous meet record of 56.53 set by Timberline’s Sara Shields in 2008. Clark also anchored Boise’s 4x200 relay that set a record with a time of 1:39.69, and she ran the final leg of the Brave’s 4x400 relay (3:54.10) in the last race of the night.

“Honestly, I’m very energetic. I’m ready to go. I’m tough,” Clark said. “I don’t care if I have a lot on my legs, I just worry about the team.”

Boise senior Autumn Shomaker became the only girls long jumper in the state to eclipse the 19-foot mark this season. Shomaker won the event with a leap of 19-8, breaking former Louisville standout Brittany Owens’ record of 19-2 set in 2012 at Borah.

“I was really excited,” said Shomaker, who was also part of Boise’s 4x200 relay. “I’ve been scratching a lot this season, so I’ve really been trying to work on getting my foot under me and figuring out my mark. I’m just so glad I was finally able to get one with good pop under me and just seeing how it turned out.”

The district record in the girls shot put fell by mere inches. Capital sophomore McKenna Chavez won the event with a heave of 43-5.5, breaking the previous record of 43-1.75 set by Mountain Home’s Deliliah Cavin in 1978.

Boise juniors Jack Sheesley, Jacob Fornander and Jens Knutsen and senior Noe Kemper established the boys 4x800 record, combining for a time of 7:51.74, besting Mountain View’s time of 7:52.18 from 2016.

Rocky Mountain senior Braden Ankeny tied the boys 200 record with his first-place finish in 21.45. He also won the 400 in 48.20.

Mountain View’s Cohen Deno, Owen McBride, Jacob Allen and Garrett Freeman teamed up for a victory in the boys 4x100 in 41.90, breaking the 2016 record of 42.24 held by Rocky Mountain.

Boise swept the boys and girls team championships. The Brave boys totaled 144 points, while Rocky Mountain was second (134) and Centennial was third (71). The Brave girls amassed 136.5 points. Mountain View was second (115.5) and Rocky Mountain was third (106.33).

4A DISTRICT TRACK MEET

The Bishop Kelly juggernaut continued to roll at the 4A District Three Meet at Ridgevue, running away with its ninth straight boys team title with 215 points, 79 clear of the host in second place.

The Knights finished first in nine of the 18 events. That included double gold-medal performances from Rakeem Johnson in the shot put (58-5) and discus (184-2), and Cam Davis in the high jump (6-2) and long jump (23-9.5).

Liam Durcan (800, 1:57.96), Charlie Goss (1,600, 4:25.15) and Elvis Yav (triple jump, 43-8) also claimed individual victories for the Knights. And Bishop Kelly finished first in the 4x400 (3:24) and medley (3:36.27) relays.

Meanwhile, Skyview repeated as the girls team champs. The Hawks finished atop the podium in 10 of the 18 events for 178 points, 23.5 points ahead of Bishop Kelly.

Sprinters Melissa Eyer and Megan Cahoon led the onslaught for Skyview. Eyer finished with four gold medals, winning the 100 (12.61) and long jump (17-5.5) while also running in the winning 4x100 (49.39) and 4x200 (1:44.68) relays.

Cahoon brought home three titles in the 200 (26.10) and 4x100 and 4x200 relays, finishing second to Eyer in the 100 individual race.

Isla Anderson was another multiple winner for Skyview in the 400 (59.07) and 4x200. Sophia Krzemien (800, 2:22.84), Camilla Freeman (3,200, 12:07.02) and Brinna Nelson (triple jump, 34-5.5) also climbed atop the podium for the Hawks.

2A SOFTBALL: COLE VALLEY REPEATS

The Chargers routed New Plymouth 12-2 in five innings to win back-to-back 2A District Three titles and clinch their state tournament berth.

Lola Crosby and Lauren Colson each racked up three hits, including a double, for Cole Valley Christian (20-5). And Karlie Barnum tossed a five-inning complete game, holding the Pilgrims to one earned run on five hits while striking out eight.
