CSK vs RR IPL 2024 Match HIGHLIGHTS: Chennai Super Kings Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad continued the ‘tradition’ of losing the toss in match 61 of Tata IPL 2024 on Sunday. Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson elected to bat first. But the CSK bowlers stifled RR from the very first over. At 42 for no loss, RR scored the lowest powerplay total in this season of IPL. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler were dismissed cheaply for 24 and 21 runs respectively. While Pathirana and Deshpande maintained CSK’s chokehold, it was Simarjeet Singh who took out RR’s openers. Simarjeet Singh was at his roaring best. With figures of 3-26, he broke the spine of Rajasthan’s batting. And Tushar Deshpande’s last over two wickets brough RR on their knees. Ruthless Chennai Super Kings have restricted Rajasthan Royals to sub-par 141/5 in 20 overs.
Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals: Gaikwad & co save the citadel
Chasing down a paltry target of 142, Chennai Super Kings lost five wickets and finally won the match 19th over with 10 balls to spare. RR bowlers dragged the match to the very end. At one point, there was a hope for Samson & co as home side lost couple of wickets in quick succession. A win at Chepauk would have sealed the playoff spot for RR. But now that CSK have won by 5 wickets, RR would need another win to make it to the next phase. As for as CSK, the playoff quest continues.

Here are key moments of CSK vs RR match 61
Chennai Super Kings beat Rajasthan Royals by 5 wickets Chennai Super Kings keep their playoff hopes alive.
Suddenly, wickets are tumbling and CSK is not as composed. Wicket no.2 for Ashwin. The RR bowler tempts Dube with a delivery just outside off stump, dangling the proverbial carrot. Dube takes the bait, attempting a big swing but failing to connect fully. He ends up spooning it high towards long on. Parag maintains his composure and calmly takes the catch, not letting the opportunity slip away.
Moeen Ali departs for 15. The delivery is full and wide, presenting an opportunity to be struck. Moeen attempts to go through with his shot but hesitates slightly. While he times it decently, he lacks the power to send it over the boundary. Avesh, stationed at deep cover, completes the catch comfortably. Chennai is three down as impact sub Burger gets Ali.
1If Chennai win this match, they will be tied on 14 points with Hyderabad. They need to win their final match to end on 16 points
Pitching on a length at middle stump, the ball skids on and subtly straightens. Mitchell misjudges it completely, and it strikes him plumb in front of the wicket. Umpire Rohan Pandit doesn’t hesitate to raise his finger. But CSK decides to go for a review. Ball tracking says the same thing- Mitchell departs. Chahal gets second wicket for RR
With four maximums and five boundaries, Chennai are batting much above the asking rate. Hence the loss of wicket inside the powerplay has not hampered the chase. With so much batting left and so little target on the board, it’s just matter of time.
RR were 38/0 in 5.3 overs, whereas CSK are 51/1 at this point. Their run rate is 9+ at the moment. Looking very comfortable in the chase. RR bowlers need a new gameplan to rein in CSK batters
Experience matters! After Trent Boult and Sandeep Sharma failed to get the breakthrough, Samson brought in Ravichandran Ashwin. Whizzing through on a length towards middle and leg, Rachin attempts a mighty swing, but ends up losing his form in the process. Moreover, the ball appears to grip the surface, causing it to pop up in the air. Ashwin promptly calls for it and completes the catch with ease.
Rajasthan Royals are opting for pace and aggressive lengths over adding an extra spinner like Keshav Maharaj. Thus, Nandre Burger gets the nod. Meanwhile, a massive six in Sandeep Sharma’s over.
Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad have begun the chase for Chennai. Trent Boult didn’t concede many runs. Time for revenge? By the way, what do you make of this post?
This is what Rajasthan Royals have managed to score in 20 overs – 141 runs. Riyan Parag was their top-scorer with 47 off 35.
What an over by Tushar Deshpande. After choking Rajasthan was not enough, CSK bowler demolished any hope of smashing big shots in the last over. Rajasthan lost two wickets in two deliveries – Dhruv Jurel and Shubham Dubey!
RR are 134/5 in 19.4 overs
Riyan Parag was dropped at 15 and 34. Luck on his side today or case of butter fingers?
RR are 129/3 in 18.4 overs
Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel are dragging Rajasthan to 150, it seems. Jurel has smashed a boundary and a six with Parag being the perfect partner. Can these young players get RR to 150? Last two overs need to be big for the visitors.
RR are 124/3 in 18 overs
Sanju Samson, who broke Shane Warne’s record of playing most matches for RR as captain, couldn’t do much today. His 15 off 19 clearly showed his struggle. There was no boundary or a maximum from Samson’s bat. This is 57th match for Samson as RR skipper. A painfully slow 100 comes up for RR. All eyes on the young guns.

RR are 102/3 in 15.5 overs
Wicket number three for Simarjeet Singh! Samson aims for a full delivery outside off, attempting to capitalize on the mid-off fielder being up. However, the ball doesn’t allow him the elevation he seeks, directing it straight into Gaikwad’s hands at mid off, where the CSK skipper safely takes the catch without any errors! Samson goes cheaply for 15 off 19.
RR are 91/3 in 14.2 overs
Ruturaj Gaikwad lost the IPL toss, again and Rajasthan Royals opted to bat first. Unlike the GT game, CSK’s main bowlers are in playing XI and they are making their presence felt. Pathirana and Deshpande conceded just 7 runs in first two overs. After a lacklustre star, a jolt for Royals and Simarjeet Singh got both openers. Now all eyes on Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson
RR are 61/2 in 10 overs
Buttler ventures down the pitch, struggles to return; Gaikwad’s close-range direct hit could have dismissed him. However, Jaiswal’s six and four off Theekshana salvages the over for RR. A square leg sweep and a late slice behind the wicket result in boundary hits.
And there’s Theekshana, straight into action. That’s exactly why he was included in the XI, stepping in when Santner faced a rough patch in Ahmedabad.
In the clash between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, MS Dhoni has the opportunity to surpass AB de Villiers as the fourth-highest six-hitter in IPL history. Dhoni requires just one more six to eclipse ABD’s record. With 250 sixes in his illustrious career, the CSK skipper eyes this milestone at Chepauk. This match holds added significance as it marks Thala’s final home game of IPL 2024.
