So what I'm looking for here are songs that mention other songs by title and - the key here - as a record.

    Examples:

ELO-"Shangri-La": "Faded like the Beatles on 'Hey Jude'"
Al Stewart - "Modern Times": "Chasing skinny blue jean girls while the band played 'Hold Me Tight'"

    What I'm NOT looking for:

    * Phrases or words in lyrics that are song titles but are not referring to a song itself

This even includes songs like "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" where Dylan name-drops about 8-10 Springsteen titles but only to describe people or places; he isn't actually citing the songs as records.

Another close-but-not-quite call is "Sweet Home Alabama" - although Skynyrd directly references Neil Young's "Southern Man" they don't name it as a record even though shortly thereafter there's the line "a Southern man don't need him around anyhow".

Think of it this way - in this case if you were transcribing the lyrics you wouldn't capitalize the title but if it were a direct cite of the song itself you would. That's the essential dividing line I'm getting at here.

"On the Radio" (2006) - Regina Spektor

References the Guns N' Roses song "November Rain" by name:

    "And on the radio
    You hear 'November Rain'
    That solo's awful long
    But it's a good refrain
    You listen to it twice
    'Cause the DJ is asleep
    On the radio"

Everybody heard him singing his song

And we all sung the chorus
    Of "I Am The Walrus""

"Dogs" by Sun Kil Moon references the song of the same name by Pink Floyd.

I gave her Pink Floyd "Animals", when we were in sixth grade
And it was on her turntable when I met her on Sunday
Her mom was gone, we were listening to "Dogs"

Gets a bit NSFW after that.

Thought of another hard case - "Glass Onion". Although Lennon references other Beatles songs he isn't citing them as records although the line "I told you 'bout the fool on the hill" comes very close. It seems though he's talking about the fool himself, not the song, thanks to the following line "I tell you man he's living there still".

Elvis' recording of "Raised On Rock" in the second verse mentions several:
"Listening to the music that my idols made
I knew every single record the DJ's played
Honky Tonk , Hound Dog, Johnny B. Goode
Chain Gang, Love Is Strange, Knock On Wood"

Tom Petty: "Runnin' Down a Dream"

Del Shannon's "Runaway" doesn't appear in quotes in the lyrics I'm seeing, and some don't even capitalize it, but I'd say it's still valid.

Elvis Costello mentions "My Favorite Things" ("by Julie Andrews, and not by John Coltrane") in "This is Hell." (Kind of hard on Julie if you ask me.)

Costello again, this time "The Great Unknown"

Though the VIPs sang "Wooden Heart", the band played "Hearts of Oak"

Also references "Danny Boy" and "Delilah", but not explicitly as song titles.
