Tweens and Teens

I am heading to Palm Springs this week with four of our kids ages 11-18. I am looking for suggestions for activities or events that might be fun. Kids are quite easy to please, anything from a farmer's market to a museum. I have the tram and zoo on my radar thus far. I was trying to find any sort of sporting events that might be going on close by, but seems we are in the shoulder season mostly for college type events. We are doing one night in Anaheim to do Disneyland for a day (it is short, but they have been before so will be fine). They will be happy spending lots of time at the pool, but wondered what other ideas you may have. Thanks!

It’s good that they will be happy with many hours in the pool. The forecast for the next several days in Palm Desert (where we are) are highs:

Wed. 97F

Thurs. 101F

Fri 101F

Sat. 102F

Sun100F

The sun has been out constantly. After about 10 or 11 am you are not going to enjoy being outdoors for long periods except at the pool or up at the top of the tram. I’d skip the Living Zoo unless you want arrive at 8:00 am when it opens. Find indoor activities like the PS Air Museum Sorry to be a spoil sport but just being realistic.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are coming from Canada and had snow as recently as last week so looking forward to sun and pool time. I appreciate indoor activities may be key. Any day trips you would suggest? We have a car. I know they will want to shop a bit as well. I will pack extra sunscreen!

If you run out of sunscreen, I assure you it’s available here.

Even though it's hot on the ground, it's 30 degrees colder at the top of the Aerial Tramway, so you may need a jacket.

Based on my experience, the zoo is not be great when it's that hot, I've found that the animals hide in the shade and are more lethargic. If you have a zoo in your home town, consider skipping that. The Palm Springs Art Museum is very cool - with some unique art. Free on Thursday afternoons (I think from 4 pm on and they are open that night until 8pm) because the Palm Springs Street Fair/Market (called VillageFest) takes place just a couple short blocks away (you don't even have to move your car) and the kids might enjoy wandering around that. All the shops stay open late too. Plus the 26' tall Forever Marilyn Sculpture is right there (diagonally across the street) which makes a fun photo opt. If you find Kaiser Grille Palm Springs on the map - the street fair takes place right there on S Palm Canyon Dr. Plenty of parking behind the main drag on Belardo plus there are official parking lots.

The Palm Springs Air Museum is also cool and interesting with over 50 actual planes, a Stealth fighter is there, lots of models and interactive displays. For a price, you can also book flights in warbirds.

The high rated Cabot's Pueblo Museum might be fun for the kids to wander - "the structure is hand-made, created from reclaimed and found objects, is four-stories, 5,000 square feet and includes 35 rooms, 150 windows and 65 doors.

Indian Canyons - Palm, Murray and Andreas. Entrance is per person not per car. Easy 1 mile loops at each canyon (and longer hikes too). Find out how Palm Springs got it's name at Palm Canyon. Look out for big horn sheep on the hills/mountains.

We walk at the Living Desert many mornings. It is opening at 8. If the low has been in the 60's and IF you get there at 8 and plan on spending 2 hours, you would be ok. The lower the low, the more active the critters have been. The sand cat, which never moves, has really been moving around. It's a lot of $$ to spend for 2 hours, though.

You're going to be uncomfortable walking in the sun after 11.

The Coachella Valley Firebirds AHL hockey team is currently in playoff games. They have home games at the Acrisure Arena this Wednesday (tomorrow) and Friday, 5/ 17 (we are going to Fridays’s game). Discounted tickets available on Vivid Seats. The arena was specially built for the Firebirds; a really fun venue for minor league hockey. And, it’s always fun to go to an ice hockey game when the outdoor temps are soaring. See generally https://cvfirebirds.com/tickets/playoffs-2023-24-season/#playoffs

I will second the Indian Canyons! And Moorten! Both are great opportunities to understand the area!

We were not at all impressed with the Village Fest, - Lots of people milling around looking at the junk for sale. Nearly impossible to move around.

For really tasty food, don't miss Nina's Greek food and pizzeria. - Both excellent and affordable!
