BYU Theatre Announces 2024-2025 Season Featuring New Works Full of “Drama, Nostalgia and Wonder”

Enjoy the Budding Talents of BYU Theatre Students Throughout the 2024-25 BYU Theatre Season

What do the Colorado River, a sheep, a cherry orchard and a pair of singing high school lovers have in common? They are all featured prominently in the productions showing at BYU this coming theatre season.

BYU Theatre has put together an exciting lineup of classic and contemporary productions for its 2024–25 season. This season boasts fun and family-oriented productions alongside more classical repertoire. 

“We are excited to welcome audiences back to West Campus for another exciting year of BYU Theatre where we will celebrate the drama, nostalgia, and wonder found through live theatre,” said BYU Theatre Artistic Director Stephanie Breinholt

Productions for the upcoming season include the toe-tapping Gershwin musical, “Crazy for You,“ and the groundbreaking new play “Men on Boats,“ as well as the classic Russian play, “The Cherry Orchard“ and Disney’s nostalgic “High School Musical.” Patrons can also enjoy the work of up-and-coming student playwrights with an evening of “Microburst Theatre.” 

Fall 2024

October Productions:

The season will open with “Men on Boats,” a semi-fictionalized version of an 1869 expedition. The intriguing tale features a one-armed captain and an unruly crew of explorers that set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. Inspired by actual travel logs, an all-female cast portrays the all-male crew in this sly comedy that challenges our preconceptions about history, masculinity and the events that shape our stories.  

Come experience new voices in theatre storytelling with “Microburst.This fast-paced festival of new plays showcases the best of student playwriting in an evening of 10-minute and one-act plays, workshopped and performed by an ensemble of bright young dramaturgs and actors. Support new work and become acquainted with the next generation of playwrights.

November Productions:

November brings the Tony Award-winning musical “Crazy for You” to the BYU stage. Unforgettable Gershwin tunes? A classic love story? Singing cowboys? “Crazy for You” has it all. When a small-town theatre is set to foreclose, a musical-loving banker decides, instead, to revive it with the magic of the Follies, some slapstick comedy and a whole lot of charm. This feel-good production reminds us all that dreams really do come true. 

Young Company, BYU’s touring troupe for children, will present “Babe, the Sheep Pig. When a tiny piglet arrives at the Hogget Farm, he is mentored by a wise dog named Fly who shares the secrets of sheepherding. To his and to Farmer Hogget’s amazement, Babe learns he has a unique gift for herding sheep. But can a small pig make it in a dog’s world? Based on Dick King-Smith’s beloved novel that inspired the Oscar-winning movie, “Babe, The Sheep Pig” tells a thrilling tale about having big dreams and sharing your gifts with the world. 

Winter 2025

February Production:

BYU’s Young Company will present their adaptation of “Henry V. It tells the tale of King Henry’s incredible success during the Hundred Years War between France and England in a family friendly production. Against overwhelming odds, the worn and weary underdog England soundly beats proud France and gains the crowd of France for England. Adapted for BYU’s Young Company, “Henry V” invites audiences young and old to contemplate how we might come together as a human family during times of disharmony.

March Productions:

Interested in contemporary American theatre? Join us for “Contemporary Play Festival,an evening of carefully curated script-in-hand readings of the best of the genre. Engage with the work of master playwrights whose important voices might otherwise not be heard in our university community. Students bring life to these award-winning scripts through carefully rehearsed staged readings. The audience is invited to post-show conversations about the themes, complications and joys of these plays.

BYU’s senior BFA acting students present what is considered one of the greatest works of Russian theatre, “The Cherry Orchard. After a prolonged absence following the death of her son, noblewoman Lyobov Ranevskaya returns to her home and finds the cherry orchard on the estate in full bloom. Despite the outward sign of prosperity, she is on the verge of financial ruin. Along with her brother, Gaev, Lyobov struggles to maintain the façade of gentility as their world crumbles around them. 

Spring Production:

The hit Disney movie “High School Musical,once filmed in Salt Lake City, finds new life onstage in the old Provo High School. When Troy, a high school jock, and Gabriella, the new smart girl at school, are encouraged to audition for the high school musical, they overcome their fears and challenge the “status quo.” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well. Take a walk down memory lane and enjoy the nostalgia of this well-known story.

Season tickets go on sale Wednesday, May 29, at https://tickets.byu.edu/arts/theatre, in person at the Marriott Center box office or by phone at 801-422-2981. Season ticket purchasers enjoy savings on each ticket, free ticket exchanges and first access to the best seats at the best prices. If you’d prefer to build your own Arts Pass to include Department of Theatre, School of Music, Department of Dance and BRAVO! performances, set a reminder for July 17.

Single-event tickets will go on sale at a later time. Due to the nature of live performances, all productions, prices and dates are subject to change.
