One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American. But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate. Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara. The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch. John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale.

Light hearted film with memorable scenes
I recall watching The Quiet Man one rainy Saturday afternoon at my parent's home in my younger years and always thought of John Wayne with the tough guy image. This film proved to be his shining moment when showing his more romantic side and when he acted alongside Maureen O'Hara as the romantic interest it showed well on screen the character's gel well together. The supporting cast of Ward Bond, Barry Fritzgerald and Victor McLaughlin (Who had previously been a boxer before Hollywood beckoned) work well together with Wayne and O'Hara. It's the case of the path of true love doesn't run smoothly throw in a boxing match, having to defend the love of your life's honour. Of course John Ford's excellent back drop of the Irish setting helps to move the story along with memorable scenes (the ... This is a classic movie. A comedy love story. Brilliantly played by the Duke, John Wayne. Made me forget the troubled world we are all living in at the moment. I was catapulted back in time when the world was a simpler and uncomplicated place to live in. Well worth the money. 👍

A lovely timeless irish romance with 2 great actors - Wayne and O'Hara.
bought item for mum-in-law who was delighted as it was not readily available on dvd. Even i remember watching this film when i was younger and it made me want to be Maureen O'Hara! A lovely irish romance with a lot of craic and tongue in cheek humour. A great role for John Wayne as the prospective suitor and his fight for his true love.
