New Taiwan President Lai’s less conciliatory stance towards China is expected

TAIPEI/BEIJING – Newly minted Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te raised some eyebrows when he referred to China in his inaugural address as just that – China.

Mr Lai, who is from the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), did so seven times in his closely watched 30-minute speech, delivered on May 20 onstage in front of the Presidential Office in Taipei.
