(WJET/WFXP) – A Lake Erie documentary series produced in Erie is up for a prestigious award.

‘Lake Erie, Our Kin,’ a two-part series produced by Erie-based filmmakers John C. Lyons and Melissa A. Troutman, has been nominated for two Emmy Awards in the Societal Concerns category in the 55th annual Central Great Lakes Emmy Awards.

The episodes were produced in the summer of 2022 and premiered in April 2023 and are part of WQLN’s “Chronicles” series, which Lyons and Troutman were formerly part of. It explored the region’s complex history with Lake Erie and how people affect the lake’s health as well as their own.

It has been aired on television locally on WQLN as well as screened at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, PennWest Edinboro, Allegheny College and Erie Center for Arts & Technology.

“Lake Erie’s health and beauty have returned after years of pollution and neglect, thanks to the efforts of people who love and care for this lake. These folks understand that the lake’s health, and future, is intricately tied to ours,” said Troutman.

“We are honored to have our work nominated for two Emmys. The recognition will surely bring more awareness to the film and its message,” said Lyons.

The “Chronicles” has also been nominated for 17 other Emmy Awards in many categories, including Sports Documentary, Arts & Entertainment and Societal Concerns, among others.

The winners will be announced on Saturday, June 22, at Hotel Cleveland.
