L-Connect Service Restart - A little program I made to make things easier

Every once in a while, L-Connect 3 gets hung up, and things don't work as expected, such as

  • Colors changed to default rainbow

  • LCD screens freeze

  • System sensors (like CPU Temp) don't display correct info

This is usually caused by "outside forces", such as:

  • Other installed software that conflicts with L-Connect

  • Using a splitter or hub, even SATA powered hubs like NZXT

  • Coming out of sleep mode

  • Etc.

A lot of people, they simply restart their system to put things back to normal. But that takes time and is usually inconvenient.

For those that don't know... the way that all of your Lian-Li stuff works is through a background process that runs each time you start your computer. This process is added to your "Services" the first time you run the L-Connect 3 software. There is also a second service, which "watches" to make sure the main service is running... if it notices that the L-Connect service has stopped, it will restart it... usually. So when you restart your whole PC, things get fixed, because part of the restart is that service gets restarted on next boot. Well... you can still fix things, by simply restarting the service in your active Windows session. But... a lot of people don't know how to do that, and it still take more than a few extra steps to do it.

So a couple months ago, I noticed that there was an actual batch file included with L-Connect specifically made to restart the service... but it looked like it hadn't been updated in a while, and didn't work correctly. So, I did a bit of self-teaching like I tend to do, and made my own files. Now, when something needs fixing, I just click the icon I have pinned in my Start Menu, and everything is reset in usually 5-10 seconds.

After seeing more than a few issues posted here recently, I figured it was time to share.

After downloading the file linked above, extract the contents, with subfolders in tact, to:

  • C:\Program Files\Lian-Li\L-Connect 3

This will create a subfolder in that folder called LC3_Restart, which will contain four files:

  • A simple PowerShell script that restarts the service

  • A "batch" file that does the following steps: kills the current session of L-Connect 3, runs the PowerShell script to restart the background service, then pauses, and give you the option to just exit, or to startup L-Connect 3, then exit

  • A shortcut, that you are going to copy to your Start Menu folder

  • A snazzy icon for the shortcut, to make things complete

  • The linked screenshots at the beginning of the post show the menu for the batch file, and the contents of the file, after extraction.

Once that is done, copy the file "L-Connect 3 RESTART Service" to the below folder:

  • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

  • This will add the shortcut to your Start Menu... once that is done, go back to your Start Menu, find the shortcut, right-click, and choose "Pin to Start" so that it is always available for you

  • Then you can simply click the button, Service will restart, and you should be back to normal again

Sometimes when downloaded and copied to a different computer, Windows shortcuts lose a setting, so make sure the following things are still in place when you do everything:

  • All four files are now in a folder at: C:\Program Files\Lian-Li\L-Connect 3\LC3_Restart ... do not rename any files, or move them anywhere else, unless this is something that you know how to troubleshoot on your own

  • The shortcut file should be in: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

On that version of the shortcut, right-click, choose "Properties," and check that the below things are still in place after you copy everything over:

  • On the "Shortcut" tab

  1. Target = "C:\Program Files\Lian-Li\L-Connect 3\LC3_Restart\LC3__Service_Restart.BAT"

  2. Start in = "C:\Program Files\Lian-Li\L-Connect 3\LC3_Restart"

  • Click on the "General" tab

  1. Click on "Advanced..."

  2. Turn on the checkbox for "Run as Administrator"

And that should do it... now you have one-click access to give L-Connect a refresh when necessary, without having to simply boot your computer.

Notes:

  • When the Service restarts, you may see some colors flash a different color for a second, and some/all of your fans will ramp up to full speed for a few seconds... this is normal

  • Every so often (and it's been very rare lately), when you do the restart, one thing still is stuck, so you have to do a second time.

  • If things still don't look correct after the second time, something else is wrong and will need troubleshooting

Why I did this:

  • When upgrading to my current build, I had more "things", so needed to add in the NZXT hub to be able to connect everything

  • A common thing for a while, was my SL INF fans would not be at their correct settings after turning the PC back on after being in Sleep mode (this has since been fixed in LC3 2.0.13)

  • Once in a while, my Strimer cables would also be on default rainbow after coming out of Sleep
