YouTube cracking down on 3rd party apps that block ads

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/youtube-will-start-blocking-third-party-clients-that-dont-show-ads/

NewPipe, ReVanced, SmartTubeNext looking like they might go the way of Reddit 3rd party apps.

unless youtube stops public access to videos it's basically impossible to stop people from blocking ads. the possibility is that they maybe could stop the video from streaming if an ad is supposed to be played but then again I'm sure the community would prefer to look at a black screen instead of an ad so technically we still win

They can make it only reachable from a custom app, then they could gatekeeper all they want.

unless the make it un accessible from a browser it'll keep working

they could stop adblockers if they wanted. It would require a huge change to their infrastructure, but they could. That isn't their goal though.

They could but the EU would basically prevent them from doing this. They actually already did

agreed, they could but that would also alienate tons of other non adblock using users which probably is not what they want

I finally switched over to Brave. Fuck YouTube. I won't ever watch their ads. Brave blocks ads just fine on YouTube.

Brave is still Chromium underneath and therefore Google. Switch to Firefox.

I'll keep that in mind but so far, Brave is working fine for me. I'll definitely do the switch if Brave does stop working though.

Why are you even watching YouTube if you fuck it? Better switch off your Internet, hater.

  1. Your first sentence makes no sense. 2. I'm not a hater. YouTube are legit forcing their ads on people by blocking ad blockers and making ads more excessive and long. They're greedy cunts. They're shoving ads down people's throats and there's multiple ads in one video, some non skippable ones and some very long ones. That's what I have a problem with. I refuse to watch ads on a site that forces them onto people and tries blocking people from watching videos when they have an adblocker enabled. Just not happening.

You support them putting ads in your face every second??

I, too, fuck YouTube fellow human.

It was only a matter of time for these apps since YouTube began their ad blocker crack down. New apps will become available over time. I believe Grayjay will probably continue to work awhile longer but you can just use a browser.

Firefox with uBO is the best solution for Windows and Android or use any browser with adskipper.me On iOS you can use Brave browser or Orion browser.

uBlock Origin is working fine on Chrome for me so I'm a little puzzled why you suggest Firefox is best. Could you please explain? I don't follow these things closely as long as things work.

My fantasy solution would be for Google to introduce a low cost Youtube ad free and background playback solution or include it in Google One (perhaps to make up for dropping the free VPN).

As long as things work, then you don’t have to change anything. There is no particular reason I use Firefox other than I try to stay away from using more Google products.

manifest v3 will make ubo stop working eventually.

and people don't trust google so they tell people to use firefox.

I don't think you will see any low cost YT plan. They might make a pay as you watch plan for people who don't watch a lot of YT to justify the monthly cost, but I am guessing that won't help anyone here.

After I posted I did consider the Manifest 3 thing looming over us Chrome users. I may end up having to review my browser choice at that time. I quite like Firefox which I used from the Phoenix days but 2 or 3 sites that I need to use are broken in Firefox so I went back to Chrome.

that article is a month old already.

Yep. Just saw it posted on another subreddit. Thought it was on topic for here. Didn't see the date.

Looks like Ad Blocker isn't working on YT as of this morning.

I just noticed the same thing, although I am not finding more complaints about it.

u/Drirlake avatar

same with me here!

me too, i just sent them a "bug" report about it, i am sure they are aware and working on a fix if possible, i don't know computers well, so not sure if there is a fix given the situation. thanks.

signing out of YT helps (as is suggested by their help page), but isn't very convenient

Pretty sure the only way they can truly prevent people from blocking ads is if they shut down their servers or if they shut down the database that stores the actual videos and convert their servers to only serve ads.

Translation: YouTube cracking down on people who don't waste time with ads on products they have no interest in and won't become interested in by having it advertised to them in any capacity (including that which the user has to willingly click on manually to see more than whatever initial s as les pitch the ad comes with).

Seriously though, I'd be a lot less insistent about blocking all ads if YouTube had the brain cells to comprehend the idea of letting users pick and choose what products/companies are advertised to them [for me it could be as simple as letting me block ads for Insurance companies, job sites, cars, alcoholic beverages, and pharmaceuticals, and i would probably let all other ads go by without interrupting them, because I have run into ads I'd be more interested in (such as Domino's and Men's Wearhouse) and only blocked them in protest of YouTube's insistence that I owe their advertisers some level of interest in their (mostly) shit products].
