SAN DIEGO---The Chattanooga Mocs shot 294 over the opening 18 holes of the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regionals. The Mocs are in 10th with 36 holes to play at the Farms Golf Club.

John Houk led the way with a 1-over 71 to sit in a tie for 13th. Paul Conroy is one behind with 72 followed by Samuel Espinosa's 75. The pair of Braedon Wear and Garrett Engle both shot 76.

The Mocs got off to a good start. The squad was 2 under through the eighth hole before hitting a speed bump. They dropped seven shots over the ninth and 10th holes to 5 over before turning the 11th and 12th red with five birdies getting the team score back to 1 over.

Conroy's birdie on the par 5 12th was the last of the day for the squad. They played the final six holes at 13 over to drop to the current 10th-place spot.

"I feel like we actually played better than what we shot today," Coach Blaine Woodruff shared. "We were fourth in the field in (total) birdies. We just need to clean up a few things for tomorrow. There's no reason to panic. We are playing well and there's plenty of golf left.

"Anything can happen especially at a course like this. We just gotta trust ourselves and execute."

North Florida has the early lead with 277. The Ospreys are followed by Oklahoma State (278), Cal (280), Oklahoma (284), San Diego (285) and West Virginia (285) in the coveted top five spots.

The field returns to the Farms at 11 a.m., Eastern time. The Mocs open on No. 10 paired with Kansas and Wright State beginning with Engle at 12:25 p.m. Wear, Espinosa, Conroy and Houk follow.
