San Francisco Giants slugger was placed on the 10-day IL last week with a shoulder injury, and Tuesday marked the first day that he was set to rejoin batting practice with the team.

Unfortunately, the Giants star ended up suffering a freak injury during BP when a ball that Soler hit ended up striking him in the head:

Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic summed up the incident:

“The Giants have to be cursed right now. Jorge Soler hit on the field for the first time since going on the IL and he fouled a ball off the top pipe of the cage that ricocheted and struck him in the head. He walked off the field with a trainer.”

It's not yet known how severe the damage is, but the 32-year-old was at least shaken up enough for him to be shut down for the day.

Soler, whose placement on the IL was made retroactive to last Sunday, had missed three games before heading to the injured list. He was hitting .202 with five home runs and 8 RBIs. Soler joined the Giants in the offseason, signing a three-year, $42 million deal as a free agent.

The Giants filled his roster spot by recalling outfielder Heliot Ramos from their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.

Ramos was the Giants’ first-round draft pick in 2017. In 30 games with Sacramento this season, he was batting .296 with eight home runs.

He appeared in 34 games with the Giants over the past two seasons, hitting .158.

Giants taking on rival Dodgers without Soler

After their 6-4 loss to the Dodgers on Monday, the Giants fell to 0-4 against their archrivals this season. San Francisco also remained the only team in MLB yet to win 3 games in a row.

Dodgers catcher Will Smith hit a two-run double in the 10th inning to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to give his team the win over the Giants.

Giants starter Jordan Hicks pitched around traffic in all five of his innings but walked off the mound in line for the win. The Dodgers forced him to throw 93 pitches to complete five innings but mustered only one run after Mookie Betts led off the game by sneaking a line drive over the left-field wall.

Twice, though, the Giants’ bullpen coughed up the lead before blowing the game for good.

The Giants and Dodgers are back at it on Tuesday night when Keaton Winn goes up against Gavin Stone.

The Giants are currently 19-24, good for fourth place in the National League West.
