A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms comes into force at 1pm on Sunday as heavy showers bring an end to the sunny weather. The warning covers the majority of the country with areas west of Bridgend and parts of Gwynedd and Anglesey spared.

There is the potential for sudden flooding and possible damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. The warning is in place until 11pm on Sunday but parts of west Scotland will continue to be affected.

A Met Office meteorologist said: "A dry and bright start to the day with thundery showers developing in the afternoon bringing heavy rain, hail, lightning accompanied by gusty winds. Feeling warm in any sunshine. Turning drier this evening with heavy showers gradually clearing to the north. Occasional clear spells by dawn with the odd shower still possible. Staying mild."
