Junji Ito is a man who needs no introduction. Often considered the godfather of horror manga, Ito is responsible for some of the most terrifying manga ever created, writing stories that have given countless readers nightmares. Over the years, Ito has branched out into other mediums, including movies, video games, and anime. However, working out where to start with Ito's massive catalog can be difficult, especially as his stories have a complex release history in America.
Ito burst onto the scene in 1987 when he submitted a story to Monthly Halloween, a shōjo magazine focused on horror stories. This story, called Tomie, received lots of praise. It also earned an honorable mention in the Kazuo Umezu Prize, drawing many eyes to the then-new mangaka. After this success, Ito continued to write stories for Monthly Halloween and other magazines and these stories would later be released as collections.
Major Horror Anime Ranking Stirs Debate After Berserk and Chainsaw Man Make Top 25
A large online poll ranking the best horror-themed anime is causing controversy for the arguable inclusion of titles like Berserk and Chainsaw Man.
Junji Ito Manga Works
The sheer volume of Ito's massive catalog can seem intimidating to newcomers. Over the years, he has produced hundreds of stories, many of which have been included in more than one collection. However, many of these collections tend to be named after a single story, making it hard to tell which books contain which stories without having a list at hand. Plus, some English-language collections translate the story titles slightly differently, meaning it is easy to spend ages searching for a story only to learn that it has been published under a different name. Even worse, some English collections have similar names despite containing different stories, further adding to the confusion.

Several of Ito's stories have become instantly recognizable classics in their own right, being known by even non-horror fans. These stories are a great starting point for people who want to dip their toes into Ito's work.
Tomie
Tomieis one of Ito's most famous and beloved works and the story that started his rise to international fame. The series follows Tomie Kawakami, a strange woman with an odd power. Tomie can make any man fall totally in love with her. Her victims become so obsessed with her that they perform horrifically violent acts to keep her, including attacking other potential lovers and attempting to kill or eat Tomie. Coincidentally, killing her helps her, as Tomie is functionally immortal, and any part cut from her can grow into a new Tomie. Even worse, her blood, organs, and hair can corrupt other humans, possessing them and transforming them into perfect copies of Tomie, which makes it easy for her corruption to spread.
This Bleach Character's Death Is the Saddest in the Series
Masaki Kurosaki's untimely end in Bleach is a tragic event that irreparably changes the Kurosaki family — especially the sensitive yet tough Ichigo.
Each chapter of Tomie focuses on a different person who encounters Tomie, seeing how their life slowly unravels due to her dark influence. It should be noted thatTomieis not a serialized story in the traditional sense, as Ito often leaves multi-year gaps between chapter releases. The series also doesn't have a constant home, with chapters appearing in several magazines and products over the years. At the time of writing, there are 22 chapters ofTomie, withthe latest, Tomie: Control, launching in Nemuki+ in May 2024.
Uzumaki
Often considered one of the best horror manga series ever written,Uzumakiwas serialized inBig Comic Spiritsmagazine between 1998 and 1999. The story follows Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito, two young people living dull lives in Kurouzu-cho. Alas, this peace is shattered when a supernatural curse based around spirals starts to invade the town, leading to people becoming obsessed with or paranoid about spirals, causing untold chaos and suffering. The two young people, hoping to save their city and friends, try to get to the bottom of the situation but quickly find that the curse is much bigger than they first thought.
The Enigma of Amigara Fault
The Enigma of Amigara Fault is one of Ito's most instantly recognizable and iconic works. It starts with a strange earthquake opening up a fault on Amigara Mountain. As people investigate this occurrence, they discover that the exposed rock face is full of human-shaped holes. Despite warnings from scientists, people become overwhelmed by a compulsion to climb inside the holes, leading them to a horrible fate.
Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu
While Junji Ito is famous for his horror work, that isn't all he does.Junji Ito's Cat Diaryis a monument to this, proving that he is just as good at writing comedy. This semi-autobiographical manga follows J-kun, a horror manga creator living with his fiancée A-ko. Also sharing the house with them are A-ko's cat, Yon, and Mu, a Norwegian Forest cat that A-ko adopts to keep Yon company.
At first, J-kun struggles to adapt to life with cats, but eventually, he falls in love with Yon and Mu and gets entangled in several silly situations due to them and their antics. One of the most fascinating things about this manga is that Ito often uses his usual horror art style for emphasis, leading to some hilarious and unexpected punchlines that perfectly complement the charming nature of the work.
