Before the crown-and-shield logo for which it is known today, given as a result of the drink being given viceregal patronage by the Governor-General of Canada, the logo of Canada Dry contained a beaver.

Interestingly, the chemist who originally devised Canada Dry, John J. McLaughlin, was the son of Robert McLaughlin (and brother of Sam McLaughlin) of McLaughlin Motor Car—McLaughlin eventually became General Motors of Canada. In fact, “Colonel Sam” administered Canada Dry for a number of years after his brother John’s death.

And, finally: Canada Dry is a much better ginger ale than Schweppes, and I will die on this hill.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Post-WWII Asian History; Dance Music; The National Park System; That Has Some Appeal; Prequels & Sequels; Starts & Ends With “L”)

While Omar ran the Dance Music category, he was a lot more conservative on his Daily Double than Will was—the $10,000 Will picked up on DD3 was enough to make sure Will had a runaway going into Final Jeopardy.

Omar 11 correct 3 incorrect
Ashley 18 correct 6 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 15 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Omar $12,200
Ashley $7,200

Nobody was able to go from “beaver” to “Canada Dry” onstage, but Will’s runaway makes him a 3-game champion! He’ll go for win #4 tomorrow!

Tonight’s results:

Ashley $7,200 – $5,001 = $2,199 (What is ?)
Omar $12,200 – $2,201 = $9,999 (What is Ozarka?)
Will $28,600 – $2,400 = $26,200 (What is Baro) (3-day total: $70,501)

20 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, May 14, 2024"

  1. Andy I’m afraid you’ve had a small oversight – Vernors is superior to both Schweppes and Canada Dry.

  2. As I was reading the clue I saw a picture of Canada Dry Ginger Ale but, honestly, I came up with Ginger Ale and could not come up with Canada Dry.

  3. After discarding Mountain Dew and Poland Springs, I landed on Canada Dry. You really have to think about each part of this clue to come up with the response (unless you just know this bit of trivia). Could be tough in 30 seconds under the lights.

    • It was tough in 30 seconds without being under the lights. Within the 30 seconds I only came up with Coors — having no idea what the labels look like now (much less in 1900) but knowing the brewery dates back at least that far and that there would have been many beavers in their area.

But then, after the 30 seconds I decided Barq’s Root Beer might be more likely (because of being a homophone with ‘bark’, which beavers eat).

  4. I agree with Nick. Vernors IS superior to Canada Dry, which is better than Schweppes.

  5. Went with Canada Dry just because I was thinking of what would appear at the top of a map that is in a beverage brand.

  6. I saw beaver and immediately went with Canada Dry making a conscious decision to not overthink this one.

Agreed on Canada Dry being the better ginger ale. It’s my usual go-to for ginger ale.

Also, the clue was super-easy, at least for me. We’ll see how the contestants shake out.

  8. Canada Dry Ginger Ale is the perfect food, not the diet however.

    • Agree on both points, which is a reason why I haven’t seen the current logo (which, as I understand it, still has the map part) in years — because the diet version is so awful but I haven’t been able to drink any non-diet beverage in decades.

  9. This is one of those clues where it makes a lot of sense only after you see the answer, to me. Looks like that aligns with what happened to the contestants

To me, the correct response to today;s final Jeopardy was a “What else could be?”
IF one pictured the current Canada Dry logo, and, exchanged a beaver for the crown.
When I heard/ read the terms crown and beverage, that’s where my mind went to. Much better than yesterday’s incomplete.

    • Neither the category nor the clue contained the term ‘crown’.

      • Bill Vollmer | May 15, 2024 at 12:17 pm | Reply

Of course you’re right. The term crown isn’t mentioned. Don’t why I said that. I hope I meant to say map. Today’s Canada Dry logo is a featureles map in the from of a shield, surmounted with a crown. A previous logo, the one I remember, discontinued in 2000, featured a map of North America, with a crown on top. That logo is what lead me to the correct response.

When I saw the word “beaver,” it reminded me of one of my fondest/fun memories of going to an ice cream shop in Toronto called “Beaver Tails.” I’m pretty sure Andy (and Matea) would be familiar with “Beaver Tails.” That put me in mind of Canada which, combined with “beverage,” made me think of Canada Dry.

I, too, prefer Canada Dry ginger ale to Schweppe’s but I’ve never had Vernors.

  12. Karen Sharp | May 14, 2024 at 7:40 pm | Reply

I was raised on Canada Dry in the summers spent with my grandparents. It is my favorite Ginger Ale. Vernor’s has a bite to it; the Giant Food brand is pretty good but IMHO Canada Dry is tops!
