The series delves into the romanticization of marriage, sex, motherhood, and friendship, as well as society's assumptions about perfection, through the perspectives of three mothers: Madeline, Celeste, and Jane. An upcoming comet threatens to wipe out human civilisation, and the film follows two astronomers as they try to warn the world. The film satirises the indifference of the government, politicians, celebrities, and media towards the climate catastrophe, with the impact event serving as an allegory for the phenomenon.

Graduate student Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio), made the remarkable discovery of a comet circling within the solar system. Its imminent collision with Earth is the main concern. Something else? Apparently, nobody gives a hoot. Cautioning humans about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is, as it turns out, a difficult reality to face. Dr. Oglethorpe, Kate, and Randall embark on a media tour. Meryl Streep portrays President Orlean, while Jonah Hill portrays her sycophantic son, Jason. Additionally, they tune in to Cate Blanchett's and Tyler Perry's lively morning program, The Daily Rip. Attempts to capture the attention of the social media-obsessed public and navigate the 24-hour news cycle in the six months leading up to the comet's arrival turn out to be quite hilarious.
