Warner Bros. recently announced that the DC Universe's first animated series, Creature Commandos, will be part of its presentation at the upcoming Annecy International Animation Film Festival. A new synopsis for the highly-anticipated adult animated series has now been shared as part of this announcement.

Per DC Film News on X, the new synopsis for Creature Commandos reveals that Amanda Waller will be the one who "forms a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners." Previously, it was theorized, but unconfirmed, that Waller and A.R.G.U.S. would be responsible for the Creature Commandos. The updated synopsis brings to mind Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad, another A.R.G.U.S.-backed team Waller oversees. At this time, it is unclear if members of the Creature Commandos, like those on Task Force X, will have nanite bombs implanted in their necks to ensure loyalty to the mission.

Creature Commandos was one of the first projects announced by Gunn during his January 2023 slate reveal of the DCU. Based on the titular team of military superhumans and monsters who were first introduced by DC Comics in 1980's Weird War Tales #93 by writer J. M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick, Creature Commandos features an all-star voice cast headlined by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

The rest of the voice cast includes Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Anya Chalotra as Circe, and Steve Agee as John Economos.

Creature Commandos Is Almost Finished

In April 2024, DC Studios head James Gunn shared that "animatics and all recording" were finished for Creature Commandos, and that he was now "waiting on the first animated cuts." The first look at Creature Commandos may be released during its Annecy presentation, which, according to the press release, promises an in-depth look at the animated series. Supervising producer Rick Morales and supervising director Balak Yves will take those in attendance through "the artistry and creative processes behind this highly anticipated series kicking off a new era of storytelling in the DC Universe."

Two Creature Commandos Characters Confirmed for Live-Action Debuts

With the DCU spanning live-action, animation, and video gaming, the plan is for each character to be played by the same actor across all mediums. The first animated character confirmed to be making the jump to live-action was Tudyk's Dr. Phosphorus. In March 2023, Tom King, a member of the DCU writer's room, let it slip that he told the character's creator, Walt Simonson, "Doctor Phosphorus is going to be in a movie."

Grillo is also set to reprise his role of Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming second season of Peacemaker, opposite John Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. Gunn announced the casting in May 2024 on Threads, teasing that the two characters have "a little unfinished business to take care of..." Gunn's post suggests that Rick Sr. will be out for justice, or maybe revenge, in Peacemaker Season 2. For those not up to date on the DCEU, Peacemaker killed Rick Sr.'s son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), in the 2021 film, The Suicide Squad, an event that will seemingly stay canon in the DCU.

Creature Commandos does not yet have a premiere date but will stream exclusively on Max.
