How One Brooklyn Neighborhood Became a Nightclub Haven

Bushwick has become a pillar of NYC’s party scene, with visitor growth exceeding hotspots like the East Village and Williamsburg. If venues get priced out, there may be few places left to go.

When Bowen Goh would visit his native New York City for college breaks more than a decade ago, there was only one club destination in Bushwick: Bossa Nova Civic Club, a small techno venue on the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Hart Street that opened in 2012.

In the years since, the industrial north Brooklyn neighborhood once dotted with vacant buildings and empty lots has rapidly become a pillar of New York City’s vast nightlife ecosystem, fueling an after-dark boom in the area even as many nightlife venues elsewhere struggle to stay afloat.
