PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The city of Providence has unveiled a new lighting feature at Waterplace Park tunnel.

Mayor Brett Smiley said the lights will enhance the beauty of the park while also improving pedestrian safety.

The new feature was revealed Wednesday night, replacing the major skylight feature and updating the infrastructure of the lighting in the tunnel.

Smiley said the new lights will change colors throughout the year in celebration of the more than 60 national days and months as well as cultural festivals.

“By beautifying parks, prioritizing pedestrian safety and promoting cultural enrichment through community collaboration, we are uplifting neighborhoods and fostering a sense of pride in our city,” he said in a statement.

Smiley added that this project is just one of many enhancements happening to public spaces downtown. Renovations are also being made to the fountain at Burnside Park, the mural at Memorial Park, and the Providence Rink.
