What the hell even is Old World Blues?

Question

So this is my second time playing Fallout New Vegas. The first time I basically just blasted through the main story and stopped playing when I finished it. This time though I'm taking my time and trying to explore as thoroughly as possible.

So today I decided to start one of the DLC's. I installed a mod that gives you the quests as you level up. That way you don't have a bunch of random quests when you start the game. The first quest I got was the Old World Blues quest so I decided to go for that one.

It literally made me lose all interest in playing. Like what is that intro? Basically 30 min of staring at some weird ass robot without having the slightest idea of what's going on.

Is it even worth it to play that DLC? Do things makes sense later on or should I just stop and revert back to the save I made just before going there?

so.... OWB is a DLC meant to be played very late in the game once you have a very good understanding of most things. The DLCS are also meant to be played in order of release, and OWB is the third. The reason it is so fucked up is multifaceted. The DLC is designed to be very comedic while also very tragic. from a writing and pacing standpoint, it is usually played around the time when the main story starts to make sense and you're well into the second half. It's a standard thing that fallout games tend to do, they like throwing in some comedy so you aren't always being sad in the wasteland.

The comedy from a story perspective will make much, much more sense as you begin to actually play it. However I would not reccomend doing that. See, it wasnt your mod that gave you the quest, but the DLC just automatically gives you the quest when you install it. Which means that you're given all of the DLC start quests as soon as you leave doc mitchel's.

Just load an old save and leave it, along with the other DLCs until a certain point.

I don't think you understand what I meant by the mod. The mod makes it so that I don't get all the quests the moment I leave Doc Mitchell's house. It gives the DLC quests to me as I level up.

But yeah, I guess I'll just go back to the Mojave and then come back to it at a later time.

It’s got more comedic elements than the other dlc, but what didn’t you like about it? That it was different?

I liked the comedic elements in the dialogue. I guess the thing that I don't like is the fact that basically everything I've experienced so far in the DLC felt like a fever dream, in addition to me not knowing what the hell is going on. And that first dialogue between you and Dr Klein or whatever his name is and the other robots felt wayyy too stretched out. I dunno. But if I know things will make more sense later, I will probably have more motivation to just keep going

Old World Blues is the best DLC if you like weird science fiction stuff. It's nothing like the main game but it's not supposed to be.

If you don't like it you don't have to play it.

It's absolutely worth playing. The intro is by far the most dialogue-intensive part of the DLC. It's meant to introduce you to the Think Tank in their current well-past-insane state. Story-wise, OWB is not very long, and by the end you'll learn why the Think Tank are this way.

OWB is easily my favorite DLC. It's hilarious. It's sad. It's got amazing loot. And it has the best ending slides across the entire game, not just the DLCs.

Old World Blues is a lot of dialogue, particularly because it is supposed to seem crazy and comedic. It feels like it’s not real because that shows how far gone the scientists actually are. It’s quirky, otherworldly and frankly just stupid - because the brains are crazy and in a way, stupid.

The entire thing is a difficulty spike and a narrative change, much like Dead Money but with very different themes but like Dead Money, I recommend you do it simply for the rewards out of it. Both dlc also serve as narrative support for the other and also Lonesome Road

Also Ideally don’t do the Repconn Ghouls quest and the Helios One missions till after you do Old World Blues, there’s a glitch that can happen that will soft lock you into a dialogue loop. This can be avoided by looking up what to press but it hurts that first time experience
