Don was born on October 14, 1939 to Frank and Verna (Peplinski) Sokoloski at what was known as the Lee place SE of Wibaux with his aunt, Helen (Sokoloski) Tocher assisting as midwife. The family moved to the "home place" seventeen miles south of Wibaux when he was four years old. Don attended eight years of grade school at the South Center Country School, two miles from his home. He then attended Sacred Heart High School in Miles City, MT graduating with the class of 1957. While attending high school, he stayed at the hospital where he worked for his room and board. Don participated in numerous sports, excelling in football and baseball.
After helping his parents for a short time at the farm, Don was drafted into the Army, spending thirteen months in Korea. Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge, he began working for Farmers Union Oil Company in
Beach, ND. During this time, he met the love of his life, Muriel Gasho of Trotters, ND. They were married November 21, 1964 at St. John's Catholic Church in Beach. The following September Mark was born and John followed in 1966. The family moved to his parent's farm in 1966, where he enjoyed farming and ranching. In 1970, Mathew joined the family. During this time Don served on numerous committees including the School Board, the ASCS Board and the Honor Guard at military funerals.
In 1980, Don went to work for the USDA and in 1984, he became an auditor and classroom trainer for the Federal Crop Insurance Program based out of
Great Falls, MT. He retired in 1994 and returned to Wibaux.
Don enjoyed a good game of any kind of cards, especially pinochle, but most important were his religion, family and the "good ole USA". Don was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and loved attending his boys' and grandchildren's sporting events.
