Gunslingers in Fighting Games

"Don’t bring a sword to a gunfight" because these fighters are well prepared for anyone who does! Gun-wielders are rare in fighting games, which is a shame in one way but a relief in another. They can be fun and flashy but also frustrating and rage-inducing!

B.B. Hood in "Darkstalkers 3"

B.B. Hood in "Darkstalkers 3"

1. B.B. Hood (Darkstalkers Series)

Probably the last character you’d expect to be packing heat, B.B. Hood (short for Baby Bonnie Hood) is a caricature of the Little Red Riding Hood character and originates from the Darkstalkers series.

B.B. Hood quickly switches from harmless innocent to a gun-wielding maniac. She can whip out a machine gun from her picnic basket at a moment's notice, ripping her victim to shreds. Her arsenal also includes missiles, grenades and mines.

2. Cable (Marvel vs. Capcom 2)

Originating from Marvel’s X-Men, Cable was added to Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as a playable character.

An infamous member of the roster, Cable is known as one of the best characters in the game. Wielding an assortment of weapons such as pistols, rifles and grenades, Cable infuriates his opponent by keeping them at range. Especially nightmarish is his super move known as Air Hyper Viper Beam. Perhaps Cable is the reason why we see so few gun-wielders in fighting games!

3. Cassie Cage (Mortal Kombat X)

Introduced in Mortal Kombat X, Cassie is the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. As quick-witted as her father and as tough as her mother, she is the leader of the Special Forces.

Cassie inherits moves from both her parents, though it’s her handguns that inflict the most damage. She can fire from range while on the ground or in the air, but she can fight just as well up close when needed.

4. Chris Redfield (Marvel vs. Capcom 3)

One of the many protagonists of the Resident Evil series, Chris made his fighting game debut in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. His appearance is specifically based on his Resident Evil 5 look.

Chris barrages his opponents with a variety of ranged weapons, such as a magnum, a grenade launcher and even mines. With this arsenal at his disposal, Chris keeps his enemies at a distance, much to their frustration.

5. Cervantes de Leon (Soulcalibur)

One of the main antagonists in the Soulcalibur series, Cervantes is a duel-wielding, undead pirate. In one hand, he holds the evil sword Soul Edge; in the other, a Pistol Sword. One of his signature moves involves firing a bullet at his enemy—an unblockable attack with a long startup animation.

6. Dante (Marvel vs. Capcom 3)

Most famously known as the main protagonist of the Devil May Cry series, Dante was added to Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s roster. As a Devil Hunter, he uses his trusty pistols, Ebony and Ivory, to get the job done.

Just like in the DMC series, Dante is all about racking up those stylish points. One of these many awe-inspiring attacks (Dante has the most special moves in the game) involves Dante spinning over his opponent and raining bullets down on their head.

7. Deathstroke (Injustice: Gods Among Us)

Deathstroke, real name Slade Wilson, is an assassin with super-human abilities. He was also the bane of many Injustice players’ existence, thanks to his array of ranged weapons!

Deathstroke pestered his opponents with handguns and a rifle from a distance, but if they managed to close the distance, Deathstroke was more than prepared with his trusty sword in hand.

8. Elphelt Valentine (Guilty Gear Xrd)

Elphelt first appeared in Guilty Gear Xrd, donning a wedding dress. She was later added to Strive, now seemingly a death metal vocalist.

Whatever her role, she’s always armed! She fires at her opponent from a distance with a rifle and blows them to pieces at close range with a shotgun. Her hilarious insta-kill involves her firing a bullet that causes her opponent to fall in love with her.

9. Erron Black (Mortal Kombat X)

Introduced in Mortal Kombat X and later appearing in 11, Erron Black is an Outworld mercenary from Earthrealm.

Erron proved to be a popular character from the start. This cowboy packs a rifle, revolvers, a sand grenade, a Tarkatan blade, and even caltrops. And, of course, his fatalities utilise these weapons in numerous gory fashions.

Happy Chaos in "Guilty Gear Strive"

10. Happy Chaos (Guilty Gear Strive)

Happy Chaos was added to Guilty Gear Strive as a DLC character and quickly became polarising thanks to his gameplay.

Despite being an all-encompassing being, Happy Chaos chooses to use guns in battle, presumably because they look cool. While a rage-inducing character to come up against, Guilty Gear players appreciate the high level of skill Happy Chaos takes to play.

11. Noel Vermillion (BlazBlue Series)

Noel Vermillion is one of three protagonists in the BlazBlue series, the other two being Ragna the Bloodedge and Jin Kisaragi. She is a former lieutenant of the NOL (Novus Orbus Librarium).

Noel wields the Arcus Diabolus: Bolverk, a pair of guns. Noel is one of the few rushdown (attacking) characters on this list, using her guns to lock down the enemy rather than keep them away.

12. Schuvaltz Katze (Bushido Blade Series)

Schuvaltz Katze is a particularly infamous character from the Bushido Blade series. This pesky gunslinger keeps his distance, pestering you with bullets while all you have is a sword. Many a child struggled to deal with this character—and some of us are scarred for life!

13. Kurtis Stryker (Mortal Kombat Series)

One of, if not the first, gunslinger in a fighting game, Stryker made his debut in Mortal Kombat 3. A member of the New York City police force, Stryker joins in the battle against Outworld invaders.

People were initially critical of Stryker’s design. Stryker stood out as an ordinary human in a series with Gods and ninjas. However, his redesign in Mortal Kombat 9 won many people over. As a police officer, Stryker has an assortment of weapons at his disposal, such as guns, grenades, a baton, and a taser.

14. Albert Wesker (Marvel vs. Capcom 3)

Known more famously as one of the main antagonists of the Resident Evil series, Wesker made his fighting game debut in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Wesker is an incredibly strong character in his debut game. His teleport shenanigans, which he can cancel into after shooting his handgun, are especially exasperating. Wesker proved a popular character, and we can only hope he’ll make another fighting game appearance in the future.

15. Victor Chevalier (Tekken 8)

Hailing from France, Victor was added to the Tekken series in the 8th edition. A suave and charismatic man, Victor founded the UH independent forces as well as the Raven Unit.
