EP Review: Darko - Greyscale (Lockjaw Records) - GAMES, BRRRAAAINS & A HEAD-BANGING LIFE

EP Review: Darko – Greyscale (Lockjaw Records)

Contemporary punk and hardcore band, Darko, return with their brand-new EP, ‘Greyscale’, continuing the new era of the band. It will be released on May 17th, via Lockjaw Records.

Coming out swinging, Darko introduce their latest work with a short and fiery hardcore punk rock banger called What I Cannot Be. The subtle intro to this track sets up a blast of vitality that doesn’t just encourage movement, it demands it. Especially as it has some real heaviness to it.

Having got your heart racing Darko now unleash a more harmonious side to their punk sound with Built On Broken Backs, Meshing elements of classic punk rock with poppy vigour and dashing in some post hardcore to create something wholly unique sounding. Following that up with another slice of manic energy called Aggro that is addictively chaotic.

Be it long or short tracks, Darko manage to make each an exciting experience and AUX II is one of the EP’s highlights. One of the more obviously post-hardcore efforts, albeit warped by a punk sensibility. It’s all over the place with intense blasts of heavy (those growling vocals), melody, and groove. It shouldn’t be as anthemic as it is, but that’s Darko for you.

However, not content with delivering delightful surprise after surprise, they wrap things up with a bit of an epic. A 5+ minute epic that has a synth intro, gives way to a dynamic blast of instrumentation before the commanding vocals arrive to drive the track forward with soaring momentum. It’s their most lavishly layered track, and once again, proves to be all over the place in a thoroughly loveable way.

Darko – Greyscale Track Listing:
