Carter began her acting career in theatre, becoming a member of New York’s Circle Repertory Company. She was the first to play the role of Effie Herrington in the production of “Up in Saratoga”, and was also cast in the a revival of “Biloxi Blues”, afterwards getting opportunities on television. One of her first roles on television was in the daytime soap opera “As the World Turns” in which she played the role of Sierra Esteban Reyes Montgomery, staying with the show from 1985 to 1988, a sister show to another soap opera entitled “Guiding Light”.

After her run with “As the World Turns”, she left daytime television, then appearing in a number of other television shows before making her film debut, with a starring role in the 1989 film “How I Got Into College” opposite Anthony Edwards. In 1990, she starred in one of her most notable roles in the monster film “Tremors”, alongside Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, and for which role she was nominated for a Saturn Award for best Supporting Actress. The film is the first installment of the “Tremors” film franchise.

Later Work

After “Tremors”, Finn had a recurring role in the series “China Beach”, in which she played the role of Nurse Linda Matlock Lanier in the series set at an evacuation hospital during the Vietnam War. In 1992 she had a lead role in the film “Sweet Justice”, then a supporting role in “Ghosts of Mississippi” which is a biographical film based on the 1994 trial of Byran De La Beckwith who was accused with the assassination of an activist during the 1960s.

Over the next few years, Carter would make guest appearances in numerous popular television shows, including “Chicago Hope”, “Law & Order”, “ER”, “Diagnosis: Murder”, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”, and “Murder She Wrote”. She also became a regular cast member in the sitcom “Secret Service Guy”, however, the show was short lived. She also had several lead roles in television movies, and one of her last on-screen appearances was the independent film “Halfway Decent” in which she co-starred alongside Ernie Hudson. She has not been seen in any acting projects since 2005.

Carter married actor Steven Weber in 1987; the couple met on the set of “As the World Turns” in which Weber played the character of Kevin Gibson. Weber is also known for his work in series such as “iZombie” and “NCIS: New Orleans”. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 1994. Three years later Carter married James Woodruff, and they would go on to have two children, however, their marriage also ended in divorce a decade later in 2007. She has a brother Hodding Carter IV, who is known to have made a career as an adventurer.
