The longstanding and popular Flint Hill School boys summer basketball league is no more.

League organizer Rico Reed, also Flint Hill School’s head boys high-school hoop coach, recently announced the high-school league will not continue.

“We’ve run the league for 19 years and put a lot of time into it. We feel like it’s an opportunity for the next younger person to start a new league,” Reed said.

The Flint Hill League began in 1994 and included a number of local teams, mainly from Northern Virginia. Local teams Flint Hill, Langley and Oakton played in the league last summer.

It had become the longest running boys high school summer league in Northern Virginia. There were 12 teams in the league last summer, when it was renamed the Dennis Scott Summer League.

The competition lasted for about month, ending in early July with playoff games. Some seasons the league held an all-star game among the top players.

The league’s roots extended much further back than 1994. Win Palmer began such a league when he was the head coach at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School in Alexandria. When he later became the coach at Flint Hill, he began the league at that Oakton school.

“The league has sure been big part of summer high-school basketball in Northern Virginia,” Reed said.
