Bike Week 2024 kicks off with events around Ireland

Bike Week 2024 kicks off this morning, Saturday, May 11th, with free, mainly family-friendly events around Ireland.

Cork City and County alone have more than 30 events planned for today — the full list for today is at corksports.ie.

Among the events in Cork today is the Cork Coffee by Bike With Cork Cycling Campaign — the cycle will include a tour of the city’s best independent coffee spots by bike. It starts at 10.00 at the Michael Collins Statue on Grand Parade.

Although, watch out that you don’t get caught in the wrong group, and you might miss your coffee fix as a group cycle out to Passage via on-streets and the old railway greenway will also leave the Michael Collins Statue on Grand Parade at 10am. It will include a picnic break in Passage before beginning the journey back to the city. You can register at eventmaster.ie.

If that coffee fix has you still away, you can take part in the midnight cycle in Cork — you might be able to catch the second night of the unusual display of Northern Lights across Ireland due to a geomagnetic storm (although forecasters say it will be less likely to be visible). It also starts at the Michael Collins Statue but at a much later time of 11:30pm and runs until 30 minutes after midnight. Also register at eventmaster.ie.

You can also check out the programme for the week in Cork, which has over 200 events—more than in many other areas combined.

In Dublin, the Cargo Bike Championship will have a large array of cargo bikes on display and fun races from 10.30am to 3pm at the Old Ferry Terminal Car Park of Dún Laoghaire Harbour on Saturday. Details at eventbrite.ie. If you’re heading to the event from the city side, you can join a group cycle that will start from Blackrock Dart Station at 11am and finish at the ferry terminal in Dún Laoghaire.

Another cycle along the Dodder Greenway, will start at 11.00am today at the Cycle Carpark opposite Speaker Connolly, Firhouse. Details at its eventbrite.ie page.

At 1pm, I Bike Dublin are supporting Phizzfest for their Family Fun Cycle as part of this year’s festival. It starts at the St Peters Road entrance of Dalymount Park.

In Galway, Tour De Merlin Woods is a family-friendly woodland cycle around Merlin Woods with bike mechanics on hand to help with repairs and maintenance. It starts at the Merlin Woods Community Garden at 12 midday.

You can find listings and details of events across the country for the week at transportforireland.ie/getting-around/by-bicycle/bikeweek.
