Q&A
I practice Hypomnemata, which is basically meditating with a notebook on hand. Write down your musings, the stream of your thought AND the problematic facts and possibilities that contradict them (this is of the essence!)
Go over your notebooks often. Contemplate and think over them. And promptly write down any insights that come up. You may also write down any quotes from your reading, or expand it into a sketchbook or a scrapbook, if you are so inclined. Synthesize and write short paragraphs, be concise.
This technique helps to fix down insight, which is all too fleeting because our mind (the Unconscious, that is) tends to forget whatever doesn't fit into its current state. It's how Plato and his disciples wrestled Philosophy out of Mysticism and superstition. They used wax tablets because paper didn't exist back then.
Be careful with this or you could just ruminate endlessly and delude yourself into thinking you’ve made progress by writing down your flaws and desires. Articulation isn’t absolution. You need to take action.
I beg to differ. You might not accept the notion, because Vita Contemplativa is very much outlawed in capitalist society. As culturally shunned as it might be, I believe Action is seldom the only (or most advisable) path to self-realization.
The practice of Hypomnemata is a way to that Know Thyself of the Socratic maxim. Motivation for any action shall come afterwards, if and when appropriate. I'd rather have my would-be terrorists writing fiction about the deed, instead of actually doing it.
Glad you found a source of joy. But you would be surprised how effective the human mind is at erecting barriers to prevent change.
If OP feels listless bc they lack friends, for example, they can scribble out how they want to make friends, introspect about root causes for lack of friends, and lay plans for making them only to look up years later and find they are still friendless bc they never actually did anything to make friends.
Plato kept notes bc he was driven to synthesize them into shared insights, to do philosophy.
Ultimately a man is what he does.
This cuts both ways: many (most) people work and grind as a way to flee from themselves and pursue their hubris. If you believe that action, in and of itself, absolves you from this, you have another thing coming.
Ultimate Truths™ only stand if enforced at gun point. I'll take that bullet any day, rather than comply with such worldview.
I like it. What do you think about digital notetaking? Meaningful practice of this sort possible? I'm split about it but apple notes is still my primary.
Pen and paper feels more real and substantial, to my mind. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer it for this particular purpose. If you'd rather capture your notes on digital, consider transcribing them on paper later as a part of your practice, and thus go over them with diligence.
find love, make art daily, almost no hard liquor but a ton of wine, long walks to the ocean, regular cardio, at-home cappuccinos
Quit all drugs for like 6 months minimum (including nic) before anything else
I had been using nicotine daily for like 6 years and quit in January. It’s so nice not being nauseous all the time. Jaw tightness/clicking also went away completely
Part of what kept me from quitting was horror stories about how hard it was, but it was a breeze. No harder than quitting caffeine cold turkey. No withdrawals besides minor fatigue that went away in a couple of days. But I was vaping and using zyn I’ve heard cigarettes are a lot harder
I think all things considered it may even out. Cigarettes may be more addictive than just nicotine because of whatever other chemicals are in them but unless you smoke inside vaping/zyns is a more constant flow for most people.
Same. I got off amphetamines and caffeine, exercised regularly and ate healthy, got a lot of sleep.
making dj mixes. it's relatively easy and it's a real creative practice that gives you a product you can listen to and feel energized and accomplished while you do other things
Exercise, weight loss, mild therapy, socializing, and striving towards ambitious but attainable goals
What is mild therapy?
General identification of thought patterns and just having a neutral 3rd party to discuss things. Once a week for maybe half an hour. Nothing too deep
Reframe your thinking. Get outside. Do something physical
This is correct. Limit how many context changes you are subject to, your brain might be fatigued. Make sure you’re getting good sleep. Limit instant gratification as well.
I scaled back my drinking enormously and that seemed to help.
Lift heavy stone voice in my head go quiet
