Acquiring materials and various resources in Hades 2 is important for unlocking incantations and making Melinoe stronger. While most of the early-game items are used to unlock tools, weapons, and soil plots, other resources such as Nightmare are used to upgrade Melinoe's arsenal.

If you're seeking animal companions to aid Melinoe on her quest through Hades 2's underworld, look no further!

Nightmare is the hardest material to find in the game. You can venture into the Underworld or the Surface without using this item once. However, upgrading Melinoe's weapons with Nightmare materials will let you beat Eris and Chronos more easily. This guide explains how to get this resource and what to do with it.

How To Get Nightmares

To acquire Nightmare resources, you must beat bosses and complete Testament challenges from The Oath of the Unseen and Testaments platform.

Testaments must be enabled first from the platform by doing the following actions:

  • Equip a specified weapon for Melinoe (visible on the boss card; it's the icon below the boss).
  • Activating Vows (modifiers) and matching them with the fear level (the purple skull you see on top of the boss card).
  • Successfully killing that boss.

If, for instance, you find the Polyphemus the Cyclops Testament challenge card with one fear level above it, and Melinoe's Moonstone Axe positioned below it, you need to activate at least one modifier and equip Melinoe with the specified weapon to trigger the particular Testament. Your reward for defeating this boss will be a Nightmare item.

Buying Nightmare

After you have unlocked the Oath of the Unseen and Testaments, Charon and the Wretched Broker will start selling Nightmare items at a very high cost.

You need at least 1,000 bones to trade one Nightmare item from the Wretched Broker. As for Charon, certain Vows increase the cost of items Charon sells, so we can not put a finger on the fixed price. However, Charon mostly sells a Nightmare item for about 1,300 Gold.

How Does The Oath Of The Unseen And Testaments Work?

Chronos is defeated by Melinoe in Hades 2

The Oath of the Unseen and Testaments help advanced players push their luck more by increasing the risks and stakes in each run. Here is the list of key terms and what these mean when you use modifiers in the game:

Mechanic

Description

Vows

The Vows are modifiers that players can activate and make future runs difficult.

Testaments

The Testaments are the challenges that require beating bosses to receive a Nightmare resource material as a reward. Each Testament requires you to meet two conditions for activation: increasing fear level and equipping the required weapon.

Fear Level

The purple skull on a boss card indicates the fear level required to activate a certain Testament. Activating more vows increases the value of fear levels.

Weapon Requirements

Each boss card specifies a Melinoe's weapon that must be equipped to activate a Testament.

For a more detailed explanation of the mechanics, you can check our The Oath of the Unseen and Testaments guide. It lists all modifiers, effects, and other useful information about the subject.

Where To Use Nightmares

To use the Nightmare resources, you must first unlock the Aspects of Night and Darkness incantation. This brings up a weapon variation of Nocturnal Arms and Aspect Awakenings (upgrade paths) for each of them in the training room.

After unlocking a weapon variation, such as Aspect of Momus, you must have one Nightmare item to unlock rank two of this weapon in the game.
