A man from Houston is facing criminal charges for interstate kidnapping of a child in connection with a double murder in Clovis, New Mexico. Alek Isaiah Collins, 26, appeared before a federal judge in Abilene, Texas, following charges detailed in a federal criminal complaint filed in New Mexico. Collins was detained on May 6th and will remain in the custody of the United States Marshals Service until he is transferred to New Mexico for further legal proceedings.

The criminal complaint outlines the events that took place on May 3, 2024, at Ned Houk Memorial Park in Clovis, where the bodies of two adult females were discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. One of the victims, identified as Jane Doe 2, showed signs of being struck by a vehicle. Her 5-year-old daughter, referred to as Minor 1, was found wounded at the scene. However, Jane Doe 2’s 10-month-old daughter, known as Minor 2, was missing, prompting an AMBER Alert for the child.

Witnesses reported seeing a maroon/red vehicle at the park around the time of the incident, and surveillance footage showed a maroon Honda with Texas license plate TTK3358 passing through a nearby McDonald’s drive-through. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been rented by Collins and was near the park at the time of the double homicide.

Cell phone records and GPS data placed Collins at the scene of the crime, and he was later tracked to a residence in Abilene, Texas. During a police operation, Collins carjacked an Uber driver and fled with Minor 2. However, the Abilene Police Department successfully apprehended Collins and safely recovered the child.

Collins has no legal custody of Minor 2 and is not related to her. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Jaymie L. Roybal and Joseph Spindle, with collaboration from various law enforcement agencies.

Historical Reporting by Collins

In September 2023, Collins contacted the FBI seeking help in locating his daughter and made threatening remarks. Subsequent calls in October 2023 involved Collins issuing threats if law enforcement did not assist him in finding his daughter. Due to his concerning behaviour, an NICS alert was activated to prevent Collins from purchasing firearms.

Despite his previous interactions with law enforcement, Collins was involved in the kidnapping of Minor 2 in connection with the double murder in Clovis. The criminal complaint against Collins details the events leading up to his arrest and the safe recovery of the child.

It is important to note that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The collaboration among law enforcement agencies led to the swift resolution of this case and the safe recovery of Minor 2.
