EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT)- Ascension Saint Vincent says its hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other sites remain “open and operational” despite a cyberattack forcing them to switch to pen and paper. But some patients say they are still dealing with delays.

Lisa Coomes says she went to the ER at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville last Friday for severe stomach pain and vomiting, two days after the reported cyberattack. Coomes says she got an EKG and a room on Friday. But after spending the day in pain and with no answers, she decided to go home.

“I was not going to sit there any longer, I was just in too much pain,” Coomes says.

Coomes says she went back to the hospital on Saturday and eventually got a CT scan and was admitted.

“The next move was to have another upper GI done. So we were going to do that on Monday. They said they faxed the order down three times and they even had somebody walk the order down, and they walked it to the wrong place. I don’t know what happened after that. Then around 3 or 4 yesterday, I had the test done,” Coomes says.

After waiting for several hours and getting no results, Coomes says she decided to check herself out, again, and go home. Although she says she understands the stress the hospital is facing from the cyberattack, she thinks the hospital should be doing more.

Ascension provided an updated statement Monday afternoon that says: ” All Ascension St. Vincent hospitals, physician offices, and care sites across Indiana remain open and operational. Despite the challenges posed by the recent ransomware incident, patient safety continues to be our utmost priority. Our dedicated doctors, nurses, and care teams are demonstrating incredible thoughtfulness and resilience as we use manual and paper-based systems during the ongoing disruption to normal systems. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this unexpected situation. Rest assured, our commitment to the health and safety of our community remains our highest priority.”
