Joe Biden Drops Brutal Mother's Day Ad Attacking Donald Trump

President Joe Biden's campaign dropped a brutal Mother's Day ad on Sunday attacking Donald Trump's past and proposed policies regarding mothers and women.

It's six months until the presidential election and Biden has ramped up insults about his political rival Trump, who has relentlessly attacked Biden since his 2020 campaign. With Biden as the Democratic incumbent and Trump the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, November is looking like a heated rematch between the two. One voting block that the Biden campaign is focusing on is women following abortion bans that states have enacted after the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court in 2022.

On Sunday, Biden's campaign released an ad that started off tranquil with scenes of mothers with their children and the words, "Happy Mother's Day" written on the bottom.

Then, the screen goes black with only the words, "But not from Donald Trump."

A clip of Trump talking about his administration's migrant family separation policy played next: "When you say to a family, that if you come we're gonna break you up, they don't come." Then, a video of a family screaming while being forcibly separated was shown.

As part of Trump's "zero-tolerance" policy, thousands of migrant children were separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border from 2017 to 2018.

Sunday's ad then went into Trump's policies on women's reproductive rights, telling voters in words written on the screen, "This is how Trump treats mothers."

Part of Trump's interview with Time magazine last month was highlighted, in which he was asked, "Do you think states should monitor women's pregnancies so they can know if they've gotten an abortion after the ban?"

The former president responded: "I think they might do that. Again, you'll have to speak to the individual states."

Another clip showed Trump being asked, "Do you believe in punishment for abortion? Yes or no, as a principal?" The former president then replied: "There has to be some form of punishment" for the woman.

Also mentioned was Trump speaking about playing an instrumental role in the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, stripping away women's right to an abortion and leaving it up to the states to decide. Trump appointed three Court justices—Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Neil Gorsuch—during his tenure, tilting the Court to a conservative majority needed to overturn the historic case.

The ad ended on a black screen with the words, "Do the moms in your life a favor. Stop Trump," written.

In response to the ad, Trump's spokesperson Steven Cheung told Newsweek via email on Sunday, "What a sad, miserable, cowardly existence Crooked Joe Biden and his campaign must have to make such a disgusting ad on such a joyous day. Their lives are obviously filled with anger, hate, and resentment because they clearly suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome. President Trump continues to live rent free in their pea-sized brains, even on Mother's Day."

When reached for comment by Newsweek, Biden's campaign referred to the press release that was sent along with the new ad. In the release, Biden-Harris 2024 senior spokesperson Lauren Hitt said, "The stakes of this election are high for all Americans, but especially moms across our country who will suffer under a second Trump term.

"Under Trump, the government will be allowed to monitor their pregnancies, and rip their families apart. Meanwhile President Biden is fighting to bring back his historic expanded Child Tax Credit to give families a little extra breathing room, and ensure paid leave for all Americans. Families depend on moms – and moms deserve a President they can depend on to protect their rights, work to lower their costs, and fight for them. Donald Trump wasn't and isn't that President, but Joe Biden is."

What Are Trump's Policies?

Trump has promoted tough immigration policies and restrictions on reproductive rights.

During his presidency, Trump enacted several pieces of anti-immigration legislation including a travel ban on several prominently Muslim countries and the "Remain in Mexico" policy. With the "Remain in Mexico" policy, migrants seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border had to stay in Mexico until their immigration hearings were held.

Meanwhile, a question on voters' minds this year is if a federal abortion ban will be enacted in the next presidential term.

In the Time magazine interview from April, Trump was asked, "Will you veto any bill that imposes any federal restrictions on abortions?"

"You don't need a federal ban," the former president said, adding that "the states would negotiate deals." However, he did not commit to vetoing a federal abortion ban bill if it were to come to his desk.

Biden's team claimed that Trump wants to "allow laws that rip away IVF [in vitro fertilization] access" in a post on X, formerly Twitter, sharing the ad. However, in a post on Trump's social media platform Truth Social in February, the former president said, "I strongly support the availability of IVF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby."
