Behold, your first look at Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik in Young Sheldon‘s series finale!
As previously reported, Parsons and Bialik will reprise their roles as Drs. Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler in the second half of the prequel’s hour-long sendoff, airing Thursday, May 16 (CBS, 8/7c) — which will be exactly five years to the day since The Big Bang Theory signed off in 2019.
The first half-hour is titled “Funeral.” The second half-hour is titled “Memoir.”
Parsons, who is an executive producer on Young Sheldon, has served as narrator on all seven seasons, while Bialik has reprised Amy and served as co-narrator on two episodes. But this is the first time that anyone from Big Bang will appear in person, on screen, on the wildly successful spinoff.
As the footage (and accompanying photos) reveal, we pick up with Sheldon and Amy years after the events of Big Bang. This was to be expected: Young Sheldon, which stars Iain Armitage as the future theoretical physicist, is told from the perspective of a more mature Sheldon, who is older than the version that Parsons last played in 2019. Through his narration, we’ve learned that Sheldon and Amy go on to have multiple children — including a son named after Sheldon’s best friend, Leonard Hofstadter.
In Big Bang’s last episode, Sheldon and Amy took home the Nobel Prize in physics for their discovery of super asymmetry. Sheldon’s prize is framed and hung up on his office wall, while a photo snapped shortly after Sheldon and Amy accepted their Nobel prize sits on the shelf below, along with a family photo featuring Young Sheldon’s George Sr., Mary, Georgie, Missy and Meemaw.
In another photo, Amy is holding a Flash coffee mug. Behind her, we spot the atomic model that once stood in Apt. 4A — the same atomic model that Leonard and Sheldon spent nearly 140 hours rebuilding before they left for Stockholm. There’s also a Rubik’s Cube-inspired coaster on Sheldon’s desk, not unlike the tissue box that sat on the end table in Leonard and Sheldon’s place.
Young Sheldon will be followed by a second Big Bang offshoot, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, centered on Sheldon’s older brother Georgie (played by Montana Jordan) and his new wife Mandy (Emily Osment), which is slated to air on CBS, Thursdays at 8/7c, this fall.
Series co-creator Chuck Lorre is also working on a third Big Bang Theory series — a top-secret project “derived from” the CBS mega-hit that is earmarked for streaming service Max.
The final episode is called memoir so it’s likely so probably writing his life story
I’m going to miss the Cooper family. Not Sheldon as he has outgrown Young Sheldon. It’s been fun.
It’s not an atomic model but a model of DNA for an imaginary species Sheldon once thought up.
He’s been narrating his childhood, and probably writing it down. Amy wonders in and sees him, and he is finishing it, and he closes it, indicating he’s finished writing.
I thought the scene of Jim and Mayim on screen will appear in the first 30 minutes of the 1 hour finale. At least this scene explains that Sheldon has been writing a memoir of his childhood. This 7 year narration isn’t a biographer asking Sheldon about his life. For the last half hour of the series finale, I suspect we will only hear Sheldon’s voice, not a video.
I am imagining Sheldon and Amy will show up at the end of the finale, then they will cut to Sheldon’s voice-over again with a montage of Sheldon’s early life with all of his family. I could be completely wrong, though.
So, thank you CBS for spoiling ys very end two weeks ahead, I guess :’)
I like the little bits in the pics that hark back to The Big Bang days. I loved TBBT and after a marathon watch of Young Sheldon, I have become fond of the Coopers. I’m looking forward to the next spinoff, as Georgie is hilarious. I’m dreading the finale, though. I’m going to miss them. It had an amazing ensemble cast.
Sheldon: “Pay attention — years from now, my biographer might ask you about this event.”
Leonard: “Oh, I have SO many things to tell your biographer.”
What ever happened to “spoiler alerts” . . . or letting the audience be surprised?
I don’t understand why they didn’t decide to keep this a secret. It’s strange they have been so eager to share the info about these scenes. It would’ve been easy to shot these limited scenes in secret on closed sets.
It’s not like Young Sheldon is this phenomenon show where people are hunting for spoilers. Also wouldn’t make sense that they are trying to have big finale numbers because the show isn’t trying to save hopes for another season. I don’t watch the show but thinks fans would’ve loved it more if it was a surprise.
So they get those casual fans to tune in. $$ ratings
Yep, good call. I loved Big Bang, but never watched YS. Now I might watch the finale!
It’s worth a watch. I recently started watching it on Netflix and binged the whole thing up to the final few upcoming episodes. The ensemble cast are amazing and large. It surprised me how entertaining they were, from the Coopers themselves (loved George, Georgie, Missy and MeeMaw) to the professors who mentored Sheldon, to the teachers and staff at the high school to the amusing pastor.
Georgie was an annoying character and the character is Texas trash – who would watch that??
Oh, please just end it. JP is like William Shatner going back to the same, tired, old, ever-depleating Star Trek well.
Jim Parsons did some voice work and is doing one scene to close out the show.
.
He’s done. The reason BBT isn’t still on the air is because he’s done. How many places do you hear Parsons groveling for any chance to play Sheldon again?
.
Good luck finding one.
.
How many places do you hear Shatner wanting to play Kirk again? Pretty much everywhere.
That has to be Amy’s Nobel Prize framed in the background. Because you know that Sheldon is literally wearing his when he goes down the comic books store and when he’s working at the university.
I know this is a Young Sheldon finale, but I hope Sheldon and Amy talk about TBBT gang and where they are in their lives. Maybe they have plans to all meet up and Shamy could make a quip about being surprised Penny and Leonard are still together. Maybe Howard and Bernadette’s kids are in college and Raj and his wife have to cancel because their son is sick. That seems like easy conversation to slip in and give us TBBT fans a status update of our faves as well.
I think this serves as a finale for Shamy. The only reason I watched TBBT after Young Sheldon was stopped due to writer’s strike. Giving more relevance and money to “beauty face and bedding skills” IMO is lame.
Why did CBS cancelled Young Sheldon?
Shelton indicated during The Big Bang Theory that he was 14 when his father died. At the same age, he graduated college in Texas and left for California to begin graduate school. The Young Sheldon series is about to reach that point, and the ‘powers that be’ apparently decided that it’s a good stopping point.
Also in TBBT, when he attends Sheldon and Amy’s wedding, Georgie angrily informs his brother that he was the one who stayed behind and helped Mary and Missy pick up the pieces after George Sr. died because Sheldon was off at school – and as usual was oblivious to anything but his own needs/wants.
These two story lines set the stage for the spinoff series featuring Georgie and Mandy, and hopefully including his mother, sister and MeMaw.
The executives are also probably trying to hold on to viewers, since they’ve been canceling good shows left, right, and sideways and we are not pleased about it.
Those cancelled good shows had low ratings (on CBS) and Blue Bloods ran for what, 14 seasons? It had a fair run.
I hope Missy returns for at least a few episodes. The actress stated she is ready to move on from that character, though. :(
2 things
1) I kind of hope they can do The 20 year reunion stated in TBBT episode where Raj ran a murder mystery and everyone agreed to meet back at the apartment building 20 years later.
2) Meemaw might be a regular/recurring character, but I hope Missy is at least a recurring guest star.
