Who are some former rising stars that never became as big as their hype?

Let’s Discuss 👀🙊

I think Rita Ora is a prime example of this. She's a former Roc Nation artist and had Jay-Z's backing when they were launching her as a recording artist over a decade ago.

She's had spouts of success at different points of her career but she's inconsistent and never became the big star that she was hyped up to be in 2012.

Who else do you think never delivered to their hype in terms of stardom and success?

Guys from the big late 2000s-early 2010s movies franchises like Taylor Lautner post Twilight franchise or Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson post Hunger Games franchise did not do as well as their female counterparts Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence. Alex Pettyfer also looked like he was going to be a star but it seems like that fizzled out quickly.

Alex Pettyfer gained a reputation for being an asshole. He got into a beef with Channing Tatum while filming/after filming Magic Mike.

He also harassed Dianna Agron during and after their relationship.

I was surprised when he popped up in the new Guy Ritchie film considering how it seemed he was essentially blackballed.

Alex Pettyfer made an enemy of Channing Tatum on the Magic Mike set, pissed off his management, and had a domestic violence incident with Dianna Agron. He did a speed run of blowing up your career.

Josh does smaller indie projects and focuses on doing political and social advocacy work. He is super pro-LGBT and outspoken on AIDS as his uncles (partners) passed from the illness. I love him, he’s truly one of the actual good celebrities. When I met him, and I’ve heard this from many, he was so kind and down to earth. He’s also so handsome in person, he has a really bright smile.

Sorry, I never get to fan girl but here I am.

Also, Joosh Futturman was an amazing charachter, on an amazing show that not enough people watched.

I read somewhere he is horrible to work with. One of the reason he wasn’t called back for Magic Mike.

Edit: i’m talking about Alex Pettyfer.

Edited

I also remember reading this back when I Am Number Four came out, as well as a not-so-blind alleging that he was horrible to his girlfriend at the time / co-star Dianna Agron. I think his fizzle was more self-imposed than anything else.

He looks like the type who thinks he’s way more talented than he actually is. Didn’t he clash with Channing Tatum?

Yeah he wouldn't pay his rent to one of Channing's friends along with some other terrible behavior.

There were allegations of domestic abuse after his split from Diana Agron. I have also never heard a good thing about him from anything that’s worked with him.

A friend worked with him on a film recently and said he was the worst person he’s ever had to interact with on set. Just an arrogant bully by the sounds of it.

Edit - Alex Pettyfer

You might throw Sam Claflin on that list. He's done well, but I'm still surprised he hasn't done better.

I love his quirky films. He’s great on prime series Daisy Jones and the Six.

I believe Josh at least did this on purpose. He’s chosen different projects and is doing well for himself but never wanted that mega fame.

Yeah he does say it was deliberate (though well maybe that’s a way to save face - doesn’t seem the type but you never know). He was in an absolutely wacky show called Futureman and was basically just living his best life. It seems like he made a lot of money with HG and now just does stuff he thinks is fun/interesting. Can’t blame him.

You just dug a memory out of my brain. I was in love with Alex Pettyfer and that book series I Am Number.

Leona Lewis. 'Bleeding Love' was everywhere and then....nothing.

u/afirework19 avatar

I love Leona! Liked Better in Time as well.

They sabotaged her second album and picking the wrong songs

Halo was offered to her but went to Beyoncé

Aw, she'd have done a beautiful version of Halo

u/merlotbarbie avatar

I REALLY want to hear a Leona Lewis version

I love her second album! Ironically she chose “Happy” which sounds exactly like Halo and also written by Ryan Tedder.

I just learned recently that Jesse McCartney wrote this song 🤯

Jesse McCartney is one of those guys who wrote a lot of stuff that people would never know

I can’t point to a source, but I thought Simon Cowell went around claiming she didn’t “like” or “want” to be famous. Since he dumped her in 2015, I feel like that is… dubious.

u/Alone-Detective6421 avatar

She runs in one of my circles and whilst I’ve never spoken to her about this (I see her at birthday parties), I’ve always gotten the impression this was the case. I don’t have any knowledge just my impression I’d likely have anyway.

Ahhhh thank you for this! I was going to say “my impression is that she’s not interested in fame and would be content being a professional working singer,” but I had nothing other than my gut to back that up!

Can’t stop thinking of Blu Cantrell

That voice and attitude 👁️🫦👁️ Pure fire.

I used to have a downstairs neighbour who played 'Breathe' on repeat for hours.

This one will seem so random, but I was thinking of her the other day... Anyone remember Pia Toscano from American Idol? It was such a huge deal when she was voted off, and I remember Tom Hanks and other celebrities tweeting about it. I thought she'd have some big career after that, but she didn't. I guess you can say the same about the majority of American Idol contestants though.

Pia is still out here singing with Andrea Bocelli and things like that, she and Katharine McPhee run in the same crowd

Someone said on Twitter the other day that Rita Ora is like humanised money laundering and I can't forget about it ever since, it's so... accurate.

u/HotFaithlessness1348 avatar

I can’t think of Rita Ora without being reminded of that time she said if she got 100k retweets she’d release new music, got nowhere near and pretended she’d been hacked. That’s her legacy for me lmao oh and saying her husband was Samoan when he isn’t at all 💀

The phrasing "somebody is threatening to release new music" lives rent free.

Ah yeah, a hacker makes it into your account and their first goal is to promote your music instead of just leaking it. Very considerate hacker.

“I’m married to half a Samoan.” Like what? First of that’s a weird way to say and 2nd, no you’re not?? Taika Waititi is very proud of his Māori heritage, how do you not know about it?

Oh my god. I wonder how his ex-wife feels reading shit like that?

Chelsea Winstanley is incredibly intelligent and accomplished. Like Taika, Chelsea is incredibly proud of her Maori heritage (she has Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāi Te Rangi ancestry through her mother whilst Taika’s father is Te Whānau-ā-Apanui).

Chelsea spearheaded te reo Māori versions of popular Disney movies like Moana, Frozen and The Lion King, she makes documentaries about Maori art and she was appointed an officer of the Order of Merit for her contributions to the film industry and to Māori.

They literally met when she interviewed him for a documentary about Māori artists.

Chelsea and Taika have put their girls into kōhanga reo, to learn their Maori language. Plus Chelsea herself spent 2022 in total immersion classes at Te Wānanga Takiura o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa in Auckland.

What must she think, seeing and hearing this? My god. What a dope Rita is.

Taika has centred much of his career around his Maori heritage and promoting indigenous work and rights.

The fact that his second wife doesn’t even understand his heritage is WILD. It means she must pay zero attention to her step-daughters too, as they are steeped in the Maori language and culture.

Perhaps she confused “Samoan” with “Polynesian”; but I don’t really see that as an excuse either. How embarrassing for both of them.

To me Rita Ora will always be the woman who hosted one cycle of America’s Next Top Model and had supposed beef with one of the contestants because the contestant dated Rita’s ex

Normani, she had everyone from BEYONCE to nicki minja publicly supporting her but she never kind of got anywhere…

She has said recently that she had to step back from her career to deal with both of her parents getting cancer.

u/doitforthecocoa avatar

That is DEVASTATING💔I love her voice but parents come first

I lost interest in her when she came out saying she supported Chris brown pretty much. Any man or woman who supports that abuser or any other abuser I can’t be a fan of.

It’s sickening that his career recovered as much as it has. He should have been blacklisted out of the industry.

Victoria played Janet in the Rocky Horror remake which was...well, it was something.

Only post-Nickelodeon thing I can think of her in.

Honestly Debby Ryan turned into a meme more than anything else which kinda makes me feel bad for her lol

Debby made a cute little homage to her radio rebel meme a couple years ago and I love it so much. The vid!

I'm so devastated that Duffy went through such abuse and probably won't come back to music. I still listen to Warwick Avenue a lot

What happened to her was absolutely crazy! Such a unique voice.

u/shambean2 avatar

Love Duffy. Warwick Avenue is such a gorgeous song. She really seemed primed to be a big thing, it's horrendous what happened to her

The whole album is awesome. For some reason syrup and honey sticks with me the most

What happened to Duffy? Mercy is such a banger

She was kidnapped and repeatedly abused for a lengthy period of time.. she wrote a long post about it awhile back., tragic story Duffy

u/_shaftpunk avatar

Damn, people suck. My gf listens to true crime stories on her phone for background noise a lot and I end up paying way more attention than her. The amount of women killed by ex’s is insanely depressing.
