Former delegate announces plan to run for Virginia Beach mayor

Former State Delegate Cheryl Turpin will face off against four other candidates for the spot.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Another person has entered the race to become Virginia Beach's next mayor. Former State Delegate Cheryl Turpin announced she plans to run for the seat in November.

Turpin is now the fifth candidate to join the race. She joins city Councilmembers Sabrina Wooten and Chris Taylor and former Councilmember John Moss in the race to lead the resort city.

They will all run against Mayor Bobby Dyer, who announced plans for re-election last year.

In a statement, Turpin said her focus is on education.

"If you want to see our future, look into our classrooms. Educators build consensus and collaboration. Virginia Beach needs a vision that does that, so I'm running for Mayor," Turpin said.

Turpin served one term in the General Assembly from 2018 to 2020.

The election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
