It's the start-up spirit, grandpa edit Come to think of it, this is the plot of an episode of Ducktales, the 2017 version. The Mark Zuckerberg bird is about to become a billionaire with his new upcoming social media app sensation, but it turns out spoiler alert that when he opens his tech vault, it's empty, he was just fleecing his investors in order to become a billionaire, he was a social media genius without a social media app. Jurassic Park was ahead of its time in its criticism of capitalism Rappaport fucked around with this message at 00:30 on May 7, 2024 |

a series of things where several people should have noticed a problem going up the chain I think it is resolved now but things could have been very bad, and I don't think I can tell the full story for 24 hours because it is about an exam

Last week I did a bunch of network changes and the next day I came in to find that a critical part of the office was cut off from the network, with my changes being the likely cause. One hour later and the boss in to help clean up my mess and we've just given up on solving the problem in the critical location and were heading out to the central server room to see if we could get any clues there and they're just like, "oh, looks like you fixed it!" We'd literally just put everything back as we'd found it in order to go check if the problem was elsewhere.

There's definitely a ghost in the machine. The number of times me walking up to a machine fixes it has shown to me that there are powerful forces beyond the rules of electricity.

quote:The Pauli effect or Pauli's device corollary is the supposed tendency of technical equipment to encounter critical failure in the presence of certain people. The term was coined after mysterious anecdotal stories involving Austrian theoretical physicist Wolfgang Pauli, describing numerous instances in which demonstrations involving equipment suffered technical problems only when he was present.

Yeah see, whereas computer janitors are those who exhibit the inverse Pauli effect, we are found at a young age and immediately brainwashed into the janitor lifestyle (anime and terrible taste in metal).

mahershalalhashbaz posted:smh at all of you having normal jobs where you hold meetings and touch computers and participate in the economy. shameful I dunno if being a teacher is a normal job but now I can say what happened. I teach history, for my last class we only have a class of 1. Everyone else was scared away because it is much, much easier to get a high score if you take economics instead of history. But because this one student has her family in china, we couldn't do the regular history class because that would be talking about china (through 20th century taiwanese history.) I've know several teachers and have had enough interactions online with people where if they were teaching in China, over the past 10 years they haven't been allowed to teach history, or gotta hide the real history books from the party censor when they show up. Currently there are 3 people in the history class behind her, and no one signed up for it next year. womp womp but anyway the usual history class is actually bent for american history - we have units on Canada, Argentina, and the US. But she wasn't interested in those, and because it is a class of 1 I gave her the option on what she wants to do. And she wanted to do Africa and the Middle East, so I had to make alot of new material just for her (that hopefully I can use for other kids or classes eventually.) So she gets to learn about the Ottomans, Ataturk, I/P, Egypt, South Africa. Yesterday was the first part of her final exams from IB. And when I'm talking to her about it, she casually mentions to me "hey, this thing on my stationary kit says Paper 3 - Americas, should I worry about that?" Because it is supposed to say Paper 3 - Africa and the Middle East. So my boss goes to check the exam that was sent to us several weeks ago and was sitting in a literal safe - Americas. oh gently caress oh gently caress This was because the usual class was Americas. So this student, when confirming what exams she will be taking several months ago saw it said Americas and signed okay, her parents saw her class list where is said americas and signed it, my boss saw it said americas and signed it, all the way up the chain. Because well, there is alot of poo poo to look at. And she's a class of one, and there are other classes of 35 that need more work. So several phonecalls to the exam hotline, she gets the right exam, but alot of running around worrying about it all morning.
