Central Catholic Competes at Division II Track & Field District Championship

The Central Catholic boys’ and girls’ track & field teams competed at the Division II District Championship on Thursday and Saturday at Oak Harbor High School.  The Fighting Irish had a combined 8 student-athletes finish in the top 4 to qualify for the upcoming Regional Championship.

On the girls’ side, junior Nyla King captured 1st place in both the 100-meter (11.84) and 200-meter dash (24.78) at the 2-day event. King also finished runner-up in the 400-meter dash (56.50).

In addition to King’s strong efforts on the girls’ squad, classmate Aaliyah McClure took 3rd place in the 100-meter hurdles (16.68).

On the boys’ side, sophomore Victor Singleton, Jr. outjumped the competition in the long jump (21-08.25).

Singleton was also a member of the victorious 4×200-meter relay (1:28.30), along with senior Jaylen Watson, sophomore Jerome Davis, and junior Anthony Lawrence, Jr.

Along with being a part of the victorious relay, Watson finished 2nd in both the 100-meter (10.95) and 200-meter dash (22.10) to qualify for regionals.

Also registering Top 4 finishes for the boys’ team in individual events were junior Jerry Barnes in the 800-meter dash (2:00.80, 3rd), sophomore Ian Smith in the long jump (20-10.00, 3rd), and senior Elijah Williams in the shot put (49-08.75, 4th).

CCHS also placed 2nd in the 4x400-meter relay (3:26.74) on the strength of strong performances by Singleton, Barnes, Lawrence, and Davis.

The Fighting Irish will return to the track on Thursday, May 23 for the Division II Regional Championship at Lexington High School. The 2-day event is slated to begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The 2nd day of the regional meet will take place on Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m.
