Mature-aged key defender Ethan Phillips will make his AFL debut this weekend for Hawthorn.

The defender joined the Hawks's rookie list for the 2024 season, to help fill the gap in the Hawks backline with James Blanck doing his ACL and being added to the long-term injury list.

Phillips has been playing for Box Hill in the VFL this year, and Port Melbourne the season prior, has enjoyed a great start to the season, averaging 17.5 disposals and 11.5 marks per game.

Executive General Manager of Football Rob McCartney said it would be an exceptional moment for Phillips in his football career.

“This is a great story of perseverance and never giving up on your dream of playing AFL footy – we are truly excited for Ethan to get his chance on Sunday," McCartney said.

"Ethan has played well at VFL level in the early part of the season. His form has been really strong showing he is a consistent performer in our defensive end, both in defending our goal and starting our attack through intercept marks.

"It'll be a great day for Ethan and his family as he starts his journey as an AFL footballer."

Phillips previously played VFL for Port Melbourne and was one of the Premier state league backs in 2022, featured in the VFL Team of the Year and claimed the prestigious Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal as the competition's best young talent.

In 2023, the defender had 18 VFL appearances, averaging 11 intercept possessions, 4.9 intercept marks, 4.6 spoils and 17.6 disposals at 83.2% efficiency per game.

The defender will fit right into senior footy due to his experience at VFL level and his current footy resume.

Phillips will play his first senior-level AFL game on Sunday when the Hawks travel to South Australia to face Port Adelaide.
