The Kansas Department of Transportation will host an open house May 23 for the U.S. Highway 56 reconstruction project in Douglas County. The public is invited to attend anytime between 4:30 and 6 p.m. at the high school in Baldwin City, 415 Eisenhower Road.

The open house will allow attendees to review the proposed project improvements, provide input and speak with project staff. There will be no formal presentation and attendees can come and go at any time during the open house.

The U.S. 56 reconstruction project is intended to enhance safety and travel on the 3.5-mile corridor between the U.S. Highway 59 interchange in Douglas County and Baldwin City. KDOT will improve the roadway’s profile and sight distance, provide increased locations for passing opportunities and widen the roadway shoulders to 10 feet.

Construction is tentatively planned to begin in Spring 2026.
