Cata Leveling is ...actually FUN! - General Discussion - World of Warcraft Forums
World of Warcraft Forums
I can’t believe I’m saying this, I actually find leveling in Cata fun! I prefer the old Vanilla world, but gameplay wise, playing a Night Elf mage, it’s quite lovely to see spell trainers still somewhat useful. I’m not making easy magnificent gold, but it’s bearable. There’s the convenience of LFG. Leveling is a nice pace, not too fast or slow. Also, the animation doesn’t look weird, and the silhouettes are much better looking even though the graphics are older. For one, the male NEs don’t have the weird tech neck, and casting animation doesn’t do that jelly fingers thing. lol
I also can’t help but notice some things look kind of off in retail. The graphics may be sharper and slicker, but the Night Elf hair all look kind of weird, especially the female studious hairband look. What’s with changing it completely in retail? It looks nothing like what it was supposed to be. The old hair was better, just needed a texture update. Also the spiky hair became round and looks like a durian fruit now. lol
I leveled in vanilla back in the day and on classic launch and I realised how dated and average the experience was especially as a warrior. Did it for the memories.
Cata feels extremely fluid and feels like just a way better version of wotlk. Honestly if I were to rank it compared to tbc/wrath I’d put it above tbc, and I’d put wotlk below tbc.
I think Ulmun and Mount Hyjal are both fun to play thru, Deepholme is one of the most interesting zones in the game, and Vashj’ir is the most beautiful zone in the game. (Twilight Highlands has a few questlines which are interesting but overall doesn’t do too much for me.)
I also appreciate how lore heavy it is, really enjoy soloing the majority of the dungeons and a couple of the raids. (Dragon Soul, however, is the bane of my WoW existance . )
So, yeah, overall I think the expansion is a good experience.
let’s see ahem
the entirety of redridge mountains
a questline in uldum.
a good part of the southern barrens quests.
quite a few of the thousand needles quests.
most of aszhara.
some questlines in mt hyjal.
some of the badlands quest, tarren mill, and a few of the silverpine forest quests.
quite a number of the western plaguelands quests.
most of un’goro.
there might be one or two in ashenvale.
a few in felwood.
there’s a quest or two in swamp of sorrows.
like a few sprinkled here and there is fine…but they have quite a few zones almost dedicated to parody quests. it makes you wonder am i playing this for the story or for comedy hour?
I have seen people wanting to do full WC and WC2 cutscene tone, I see streamers advocating for that pretty hard, and I think that would be way too much in the opposite direction. I would much rather have something like Cata than everyone dying brutal deaths.
I worry with Anduin’s PTSD and the void being the villain that we are going to go a little too dark. That seems to be the new pattern, comedy expansion followed by dark expansion.
Even if its not the majority, I suppose it breaks me out of my immersion. When I play I like to imagine I am having some sort of Epic adventure, Peter Jackson LOTR style. When I am reminded of Rambo for an entire zone it completely shatters that head-role play.
I am not saying classic era was free of parody either, every other quest description has some kind of movie or song quote hidden in there. I suppose it’s just not as obvious.
Since it’s re-releasing I will try and replay it now with an open mind.
