Local businesses offer solutions for last-minute Mother’s Day dining plans
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Mother’s Day preparations are well underway in South Bend. Many local restaurants have planned special brunches and dinners as ways to honor mothers and grandmothers.
In downtown South Bend, Fiddler’s Hearth has a Mother’s Day carvery with live music. Bill Bosler, a Michiana musician, will play the hammered dulcimer. The buffet runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with some spaces left open purposefully for walk-ins. Carol Meehan, the Lady of the House at Fiddler’s Hearth, explained, “We’re about, maybe, two-thirds full to three-fourths full. There’s room for walk-ins deliberately throughout the day. If you’re in a pinch and don’t know where to take mom, come on down. Check it out.”
Just east of downtown, Carmela’s is hosting a family-run, buffet-style brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with space still available on the patio. Adriana Macri, the manager of operations, is all set to welcome guests. “Even though my mom and I are moms and will be working, we want to make it a very special day for all of our customers who look forward to this every year. Like I said, it’s an annual brunch, only once a year, and the whole family comes to work that day to make sure that it’s a special, special day for all the moms out there. And if you’re looking for a reservation last minute, we do have a few openings.”
For anyone who prefers to eat at home but needs a little last-minute assistance, Carmela’s also offers take-and-bake options, including homemade meatballs and lasagna. Macri described some of Carmela’s delicious treats. “I have take-and-bake cinnamon rolls that are really popular if you want to wake mom up with a delicious pan of hot cinnamon rolls. We’ve got those. We also have some beautiful, heart-shaped, strawberry cakes that are available as well.”
Elsewhere in South Bend, the Four Winds Casino has brunch and dinner offerings from noon to 8 p.m. with a first-come, first-served, all-you-can-eat, seafood and prime rib buffet. According to Dean Heintzelman, Food and Beverage Manager at Four Winds South Bend, “There’s not going to be a bad meal here on Mother’s Day. There’s so many good options. And we just really want you to come out and have a good time. We’re going to have the sea bar open. We’re going to have trivia in Edgewater Cafe, kind of toward the dinner time hour. So you’ll get the opportunity to play some trivia with your mom which is a lot of fun.”
