Okay, Pitch Perfect IS cringey... but that's kinda the point?

Let's face it: if you can't embrace the over-the-top cheesiness, Pitch Perfect might not be your jam. It's not exactly an Oscar contender for realism. But that's the beauty of it!

Once you surrender to the silliness, it's a total blast. The heart of the movie is in the music, the a cappella performances that knock your socks off. It wouldn't work as a drama or a thriller – it'd be laughably bad. But as a musical comedy? It's pure gold.

The 'cringe' factor comes from how everyone treats a cappella like the fate of the world hangs in the balance. The intense rivalries, the ridiculously dramatic announcers – it's so fake and over-the-top, but in the context of the movie, it's hilarious!

So, what do you think, fellow Bellas? Is Pitch Perfect intentionally cringey and awesome, or just plain bad? Let's discuss!

I think they were aware of the cheesiness when they wrote it, but it was also largely informed by actual acapella groups who do take acapella seriously because it matters to them. The movie is both a parody of and a loving homage to acapella kids.

Yeah, I mean, we are still talking about it, it must have touched some hearts. However most of the cringe is not in the singing parts (those are Cringey too) but when they try to dialog like in the scene in Pitch perfect 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_BolURdHXo

Oh god yeah PP2 had a lot of cringe moments. In particular, Beca's weird reaction to Kommissar was the result of a misguided attempt to pander to the notable queer fanbase that had sprung up around the first movie.

Coming from an ex theatre and choir nerd I just love the musical colabs and I get nostalgic over just jamming out with fellow music nerds. While jamming we never got as complicated as multiple songs in canon but someone starting off and everyone joining in was super fun. So I can relate to all that. Some of the contrived story is a bit weird but fun if you can compartmentalise it as it’s own thing.

That's awesome; we need to be able to be happy doing whatever we love; the Pitch perfect world still seems like a lot of fun.

I liked it.

Acapella has its place.

Like in this beautiful example.

I get it and I agree; the cringe on the other side it's not on this presentation.

As much as I love Pitch Perfect, I do feel it was a movie that was very much of its time and likely won’t age well the more the years tick on.

And that is likely why more people will view it as cringy or cheesy going forward. I was in college when this movie came out so it kind of a real time bookmark on that time in my life so it holds a lot of nostalgia for me. But watching it back in my 30’s over 10 years later I can see why people would have this opinion of it.

But I feel like a lot of movies and tv shows suffer this fate with the passing of time. Especially movies aimed at teens etc.

i love pitch perfect, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with "cringe comedy" as you call it. there is room for movies like that, and for people in that space.

It's still cingey by today standards as most teen movies are, I'm not saying it's not bad and I even asume that some of that was done on purpose, Glee is also Cringey AF and there is nothing wrong with that.
