What are your favourite "Masters of Horror" episodes?
Remember this awesome anthology series with so much talent and creativity involved? What are your favourite episodes? Mine are, hands down:
-
"Imprint" by Takashi Miike
-
"Cigarette Burns" by John Carpenter
-
"Jenifer" by Dario Argento
-
"Deer Woman" by John Landis
-
"Incident On and Off a Mountain Road" by Don Coscarelli
-
"The Black Cat" by Stuart Gordon
God, I wish they'd revive it with today's indie horror filmmakers such as David Robert Mitchell, Justin Benson + Aaron Moorhead, Rose Glass, Mike Flanagan, etc. Can you imagine that?
🚬 Burns
This is my top pick as well.
One of Carpenter's best, imho, and probably the last really-good thing he directed. The Ward was pretty bad for the half hour I could take. It's like it wanted to be Picnic at Hanging Rock with a little bit of Suspiria around the edges in that first half-hour.
I watched The Ward but can not remember any of it. I guess it was pretty forgettable.
Cigarette Burns is classic for me and by far my fave. I love Udo Kier and how over the top the whole thing is. I love that it feels like an homage to the horror genre by one of the most iconic horror directors.
Imprint and Pelts were memorably off-putting and extremely disgusting- in an awesome way.
Most of the others didn't stick with me (seen years ago). Never saw Jenifer but based on other comments, I plan to watch it soon! Just noticed the show is available on Tubi.
Jenifer is maybe the most uncomfortable thing I've ever watched.
Is that the one where the dude finds the chick in the woods with a horribly monstrous face/mouth and fucks her? Lmfao awful ( in a good way)! I saw that in maybe 9th or 10th grade, had no idea it was Argento as I wasn’t up on horror directors too much back then!
That's the one! She also eats his cat, but he's like "Nah this is cool. Nothing to see here."
Same. If the true test of great horror is that it makes you wish you hadn't seen it, then this is seriously great.
Dreams In The Witch House, and Cigarette Burns are my top two favorites of the series.
My top two as well.
Love them both. Dreams is one of my favorite Lovecraft adaptations.
Same
"Imprint" Takashi Miike
"Pelts" Dario Argento
"The Black Cat" Stuart Gordon
"Cigarette Burns" John Carpenter
"Haeckel's Tale" John McNaughton
Pelts was so good. Argento also did Jenifer, which is another one of my favorites.
The Damned Thing ruled
So did The Screwfly Solution
Screwfly is my choice as well. Nowadays, it works perfectly as a metaphor for how rage issues have been created by social media and bias cable networks for political gain.
I luckily scored The Damned Thing on DVD recently.
Cigarette Burns
Deer Woman
Sick Girl
Pro-Life
Family
The human evil part of the story was dope (Ron Perlman did a great job), but the supernatural evil part was kinda meh to me. Sadly can't add it to my list of favourites, but the potential and some scenes were pretty horrifying here.
I like the big idea behind this episode but the end-product doesn't work for me. It looks and feels a little too cheap and tawdry.
Deer Woman was so underrated. It was such a fun episode.
So freakin’ funny, and I liked the quick mention of the werewolf in London.
I like all of this alot especially "Family". George Wendt nailed that role. Make me want to rewatch these tonight!
pelts. meatloaf is brilliant.
This episode is so depraved and I love it.
Very underrated series as a whole. Like many here I thought Cigarette Burns was the best one. Loved Screwfly Solution too. But have to say I'm kind of surprised hardly anyone mentions Stuart Gordon's Dreams in the Witch House. Another solid Gordon Lovecraft adaptation like Dagon, From Beyond and Re-animator.
Imprint, Jennifer, and Cigarette burns are far ahead of the rest IIRC, but I enjoyed some of the others
Edit: Pick Me Up is up there too, although I'm probably alone on that one lol.
Edit: Honorable mention is Pelts!
Nope, count me in. Admittedly I haven't watched Masters of Horror in quite some time, but Pick me Up is the only one I distinctly remember. Everything else I know I watched, but that's about all I remember about them.
I love Dance of the Dead by Tobe Hooper! Doesn’t seem to be well liked in this thread but I think it’s a fun one
“Sick Girl” by Lucky McKee! Love Angela Bettis
"Homecoming" by Joe Dante
"Jenifer" by Dario Argento
"The Fair Haired Child" by William Malone
"Imprint" by Takashi Miike
"Incident On and Off a Mountain Road" by Don Coscarelli
I'd never really thought about it until now but I guess all the episodes I really liked were in the first season. Weird.
I love anthology series/films, esp the old ones, yet for some reason I never got round to watching this, time to change that I think
You won't regret it. Also check out Fear Itself which is unofficially season 3 of Masters of Horror but tbh isn't in the same league at all.
Thanks, there's some full episodes of both on YouTube, I'll def check them out
Fear Itself in on Plex? I agree it’s not nearly as good but it’s still worth a watch.
Cigarettes Burns.
Screw Fly Solution
Fair Haired child
FYI: On Tubi right now
The Washingtonians.. creepy!
Chocolate and The Deer woman are my least favorite. Cigarette Burns, The Fair Haired Child and Jenifer are my top pick..
I'll say We All Scream for Ice Cream if only cause if featured a Lacuna Coil song. I honestly enjoyed all of them but a LOT were tacky/campy.
Cigarette Burns. I wish it was a full-length film, it would probably be a true classic…
I’ve got a lot of favorites for season 1.
“Incident On and Off a Mountain Road”, “Dreams In The Witch House”, “Jenifer”, “Cigarette Burns”, “Fair Haired Child” & “Imprint”
“Dreams In The Witch House” is still the best adaptation to date. Way better than both the movie & Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities version.
For Season 2 the only one that really stood out for me was “We All Scream For Ice Cream”
I hadn't even heard of this before seeing this post, it looks incredible. Thanks so much, my wife and I love horror so really looking forward to watching through this.
The series came out a month after I started university. My landlord provided satellite and I watched every episode when it premiered. Can't believe it's already been 19 years...
Dino Cascarelli and Takashi Miike made the best episodes for me.
IMPRINT.
Imprint, cigarette burns, dreams in the witch house
Cigarette burns was great only thing i kinda had a problem with was norman reedus’ acting, he didnt seem to want to be there at all lol. Overall was still very enjoyable
I loved The Fair Haired Child
Jenifer and Haeckles(I know its spelled wrong lol) tale are the 2 that I still remember very well. That was such a great series
Imprints, Pelts, Cigarette Burns, Family, Pro-Life and Dream Cruise were my favourites.
If they did another series, my director picks would be:
Ben Wheatley, Yeon Sang-ho, Damien Leone, Jordan Peele, Panos Cosmatos and Mike Flanagan.
This us as much about their profile as my own opinions about their work...
Panos Cosmatos did something quite similar in Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities", have you seen it? They say it's one of the best episodes from there.
I've seen the show, I don't think I realised he did an episode!
Although I am dimly remembering a conversation with my partner where I said something very similar.
I've just checked Wikipedia and YES! Great episode!
You mistakenly put Cigarette Burns as 2 instead of #1
Without a doubt the strangest and best thing I’ve ever seen rather than read
I sing the gospel songs from “Family” all the time to trigger a response from my husband.
Wtf.
I didn’t even know this show existed.
BRB.
It was a GREAT show
Not my favorite per se, but in addition to the other greats which have been mentioned, Family was one of the better episodes as well.
I would have to seriously consider paying for a streaming service that revives Masters of Horror.
A revival would be the best thing in ages! Imagine an hour long episode each directed by Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, Jordan Peele, David Lynch, Panos Cosmatos, David Cronenberg, Brian Yunza and Sam Raimi. We would be eating so good.
This topic comes up every so often, so just going to quote myself from 2018:
Cigarette Burns
Dreams in the Witch House - like the overall mood
Homecoming - it's VERY on the nose, which I normally find annoying, but I found it amusing, especially the woman who's supposed to be an Ann Coulter type. Regardless of the politics it's fun and works as a sendup of political culture.
Deer Woman - funny but still suitably dramatic when required, one of the best acted episodes
Sick Girl - I like weird stuff and this is one of the weirdest episodes.
Imprint - I like how ****ed up this episode is - not afraid to go there
Valerie on the Stairs - I remember liking it. Somewhat similar vibe to Dreams in the Witch House.
I like a lot of the ones listed here…but I don’t think I’ve seen a vote for “Sounds Like”…that one was so well done, I thought.
Cigarette burns but the john landis one was funny. Thats said, none of them are incredible. Even imprint.
Pick Me Up by Larry Cohen.
I tried to get into this series. After "Dance of the Dead" I stopped watching, because that episode was so lame
The next episode was Jenifer which is one of the best of the two seasons.
I'll give the series another chance since you said that
Family and We All Scream for Ice Cream
Home Comming
“Dance of the dead”
Jennifer and Pelts
Imprint is so so so good! I haven't watched all the episodes yet, but Imprint scarred me for life.
Imprint is one of my all time favorite “movies”, short film or not.
Jenifer makes me question myself.
Cigarette burns for sure and also Valerie on the stairs.
“Pick me up”will always be my all time favorite
In no particular order:
Cigarette Burns
The Screwfly Solution
Sick Girl
Pro-Life
Imprint
Jenifer
Sick Girl is so dumb, it cracks me up. Totally gonna watch it tonight. Thanks for reminding me of its existence.
Definitely “Incident on and off a Mountain Road”, with “Jennifer” being a close second.
Cigarette Burns for sure
Valerie on the Stairs
Dreams in the Witch House
Deer Woman
Jennifer straight up gave me the willies. Saw that face every time I closed my eyes for a few days. The Black Cat is also outstanding.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned The Fair Haired Child. That DVD cover haunted me every time I went to Hollywood Video years before summoning the courage to watch it.
Its honestly the only masters of horror episode/short film i watched all the way through so idk how it compares to the others. The beginning is kind of boring but I like the build up to showing the monster. Super scary looking thing.
What’s the one the teens going to some weird club that makes zombies dance by electrifying them. There was a weird melty rain in the beginning and a mom and daughter run a diner that doesn’t make money. I’m thinking this was a Masters of Horror. It was the first one I saw and it got me interested in finding more episodes to watch in a “Whoa, what’s this show?” way where you just stop because something really interesting & cool is on.
Incident on and off a mountain road.Â
Cigarette Burns, Imprint, Pro Life and Fair Haired Child
Fair Haired Child
the big tiddy episode, right to die or something like that :D
The Screwfly Solution also good :D
I liked almost all of them. Imprint was my least favorite, however.
