Just some general campus life questions as an upcoming freshman

Hi there, I am in incoming freshman to OSU and am very excited to move to someplace new. The city I come from has become extremely stale and boring and I am very much looking forward to a change of scenery. But with that change, I have a couple questions I’d be interested having answered by some older students.

Question 1: Are there some good spots for viewing sunrises/sunsets? That used to be one of my favorite things to do in my town but unfortunately the places I used to go have been turned into construction sites for more schooling or streets, very annoying. And on the topic of the sky, obviously won’t be on campus but is there a place kind of close to campus to go star gazing? There is a ton of light pollution around me and I’d never really be able to view the night sky in that manner consistently.

Question 2: Any good bike routes? I have a friend who lives about an hour out from me and his neighborhood leads to a great bike trail, and am wondering if there is anything like that at OSU. Or at least if the sidewalks there are good for biking/jogging.

Question 3: I’ll probably figure this out more as I live there, but what are some good places to eat around campus? Obviously there is Eskimo Joe’s but on my few visits to Stillwater, I haven’t been able to try that many places, and am wondering if there are any other local places that are solid. And on that topic, if any of the places are on the healthier side, at least not extremely loaded with calories in everything.

Question 4: What are some good ways to meet new people outside of just classes? I’ve never been that big of a party head so I don’t know if I’d be meeting people that way. Are there loads of clubs I could join to meet new people, or do you just meet people through classes and stuff? Know this question is a little dumb but I’m just curious about it 😅😅.

If you took the time to read and respond to this, I greatly appreciate it, and I am just very excited to come this fall!

  1. Some great places to view Sunsets/sunrises would be Lake Carl Blackwell, EM, Various spots around campus (view from student union is pretty cool), Fairgrounds during the county fair you can ride the Ferris wheel. You can also get a lake Carl Blackwell annual pass for $25 as student. Lake Carl Blackwell is a good spot for star gazing too as it's about 4 miles west of Stillwater.

  2. As far as biking goes the roads and sidewalks are pretty good for biking. With the closest you are to campus typically the better the sidewalks will be for bike riding. There's a bike trail at lake Carl black and several a Lake McMurtry. There's a paved bike trail/walking path around Boomer Lake that then goes south from the lake.

  3. Louie's, Ted's Cantina (I believe it's called), DP Dough Chico's, Eskimo and Mexico Joe's, Bad Brad's BBQ, Golden Dragon, and Nikki's Greek is what I can come up with off the top of my head. Generally the locally owned Mexican restaurants will always be good. There's also Mugsy's in Yale if your willing to travel a bit, hell the drive may be shorter than the wait for Texas Roadhouse which serves the same type of stuff.

  4. As dumb and cliche as it may sound your best bet for meeting new people would be through the clubs and your job if you have one during college. You're roommates may also introduce you to their friend group too. If you like playing DnD or videogames then you should join their respective clubs, both the DnD club and gamers of OSU club have their own discord servers which may make it easier for you to make friends. Biggest thing is to not be afraid to talk to people, waiting on your food strike a conversation up with the person next you. Nine times out of 10 they won't mind at all.

Edit: to be able to answer each question individually because Reddit won't let me see the post while commenting

I hope my answers help you

This is very helpful thank you. I’ll definitely check out clubs to see if I can find some more people. As for roommates, I actually already know all of them, which is a blessing and a curse lol. But for the other info, thanks for all of that, I will definitely be referencing this from here on out, it seems to be extremely helpful

The locals know the place to go see the sunset is on N. Western Rd. where the new fire station is being built.

The locals also know that the Garage has better cheeseburgers and fries than Eskimo Joe's. Eskimo Joe's appeals most to tourists and convention goers. Eskimos Joe's benefits a lot from gatherings held at OSU even during the summer. Mexican food and chicken are quite popular in Stillwater.

The recently built bike route on Duck St. from 6th to 12th is pretty good and wide. That part of Duck St. was cut from 4 to 3 lanes to make plenty of room for bikes.

Granny's kitchen is great for a big breakfast, the Cowboy Breakfast.

Are you interested in Greek Life? If so, you will meet people with similar interests and you would be exposed to so many other girls and young men.
