Facebook, Instagram down for several users as Meta services hit by widespread outages

A few users faced difficulties accessing Facebook and Instagram, leading to inconvenience. It's worth noting that not all users were affected by these issues, but rather only a subset of users experienced problems as Meta services were facing some issues.

Facebook-Instagram down: Several users reported that various Meta applications were down including Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday. Meta services are currently experiencing outages, primarily centered around New York and California. Smaller disruptions are being reported across the country, suggesting a server-side issue that is expected to be resolved shortly.

Reports of Instagram and Facebook outages began appearing on Downdetector around 7 pm (EST). Additionally, Threads is also experiencing disruptions, although it wasn't reflected in the tool until after 8 pm (EST), as per reports.

Several users experience outages 

DownDetector has recorded numerous reports of Instagram and other Meta services experiencing disruptions over the past few hours. Additionally, some users have voiced concerns about a potential outage on X. Several Instagram users have reported encountering a page displaying the message: "Something went wrong. However, the exact number of affected users remains unclear at this time.

Meta faced similar issue in March

Earlier on March 5 this year, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, had faced widespread global outage.  Andy Stone, Communications Director at Meta, had acknowledged the technical issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by the outage. However, the issue was resolved a few hours later. 

Facebook and Instagram face European Union scrutiny

Recently, the European Union said that it's investigating Facebook and Instagram over a range of suspected violations of the bloc's digital rulebook, including not doing enough to protect users from foreign disinformation ahead of EU-wide elections. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said it's opening formal proceedings into whether parent company Meta Platforms breached the Digital Services Act, a sweeping set of regulations designed to protect internet users and clean up social media platforms under threat of hefty fines worth up to 6% of annual revenue.
