Katrina Kaif said that there was no way one would look at her and say that she was a Caucasian child.

After more than 21 years in Bollywood, Katrina Kaif has established herself as a superstar in the Indian film industry. When Katrina first started out in films, fans didn’t appreciate the way she spoke Hindi. Katrina was born in British Hong Kong to an Indian Kashmiri father, Mohammed Kaif and a British mother, Suzanne Turquotte. She also moved to several countries as a child and that shaped her accent. However, even though it took her some time to work on her Hindi, Katrina felt she belonged in India and it was the right fit for her.

In an old interview with Barkha Dutt, Katrina was asked if she felt disconnected from her Indian side after her parents divorced and her father didn’t remain in her life as much. She said, “I don’t think so because, you know, it’s such a basic thing to say that’ll probably sound very stupid but you must’ve seen it enough in your friends how you have very dark children who grow up to be very fair?  I was a very dark child. There was no way you would look at me and say that this is a Caucasian child. I was always known as how exotic or how ethnic.”

“So, I was always aware of that and somewhere, I lacked a sense of belonging because I travelled to so many countries. By coincidence, those countries were the far east Hong Kong, China, Japan, France, very predominantly fair, white Caucasian countries. So that instilled it in me more. Which is probably why when I came to India, maybe other people would’ve gotten afraid that I’d just come to another country and landed up here. But probably for me, I felt such a sense of belonging because I realised that it just fit somehow,” she added.

Katrina Kaif embarked on the journey of acting with the film Boom. Speculations suggest that Salman Khan helped Katrina resurrect her career. Her second Bollywood release, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya with Salman, made her a recognised face in the industry. Since then, she has never looked back. Her hard work, dedication, and passion led her to become one of the highest-paid actresses in Bollywood with a net worth of nearly Rs 263 crore.

Currently, she’s busy trying to work with her favourite directors. Recently, she got to work with Sriram Raghavan for the first time on their film Merry Christmas, which was released earlier this year. The film, also featuring Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathy, was based on Frédéric Dard’s French novel Le Monte-charge (Bird in a Cage).
