Kings, Bolts break 1-1 tie in Dasmarinas gig

BEFORE fielding questions in the post-game presser after Game Two, Meralco coach Luigi Trillo and ace player Chris Newsome shared the stats sheet to check on the numbers.

Though winning a bit comfortably in the end, Trillo was convinced they have their hands full in their showdown with Barangay Ginebra.

"It's gut it out. It's hard," said Trillo, seeing a protracted entanglement with the Gin Kings in their side of the PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinal series.

Trillo was glad they pulled off Game Two, 103-91, and avoided falling to a 0-2 hole. But then he's expecting a strong Ginebra fightback that they have to be prepared about.

At least, the two teams now have a longer break of two days before duking it out again in the third game of their race-to-four series set on the road in Dasmarinas, Cavite.

Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. at the Dasmarinas Arena.

One thing Newsome is very sure about is that "you can't let your guard down at anytime."

A nagging thought for Trillo is how to beat coach Tim Cone and his Gin Kings in back-to-back fashion.

"It's so hard to win back-to-back in a series and it's most especially so against Ginebra," said Trillo whose chargers just got even following their 92-88 loss in the series opener Friday, snapping their five-game streak.

"We know we're capable, we know we can, but we really have to be detailed in things we do. We know there would be struggles," Trillo added.

"There's certain things we're giving up and certain things we're taking away. It's a best of seven and we believe the more we do those things better, we have a better chance," Trillo further said.

In the end, it's about competing, and Trillo believes: "We're sending a message that we can."

The Bolts competed and squeezed through Sunday in battling with guts, poise and composure.

They squandered a 17-point spread but weathered a Christian Standhardinger storm with the Bolts righting the ship in the fourth quarter.

Negated was Standhardinger's 41-point career-best game.

"We're okay with letting one guy go off if that means everybody else is cold and not in rhythm 'coz at the end of the day, all we need is a win. At the end of the game, if we're the ones that prevailed, then we did our jobs despite how many points our opponents had," said Newsome.

Newsome, Chris Banchero, Allein Maliksi and one of Standhardinger's multiple defenders, Raymond Almazan, steered Meralco back in front and conjured a 15-3 barrage in the last 5:58 to secure the equalizer.

And thus these combatants fight for the upper hand once again.(SB)
