What’s Working and What Isn’t? | Sunday, May 19, 2024 - Tuesday, May 21, 2024
Discuss what you are playing, what you’re having success with(or failures with), and any new/cool ideas you’ve been experimenting with, etc. The point is to share what you’ve been playing, and how it’s going, good or bad - there are no other rules or requirements.
Some ideas on what to post/share:
-
What you’ve been playing and its successes (or struggles). Stats are not required. There is no minimum rank required, though sharing what rank you’ve been playing at is preferred.
-
Deck adjustments you made or are planning to make in reaction to the meta or as new innovation. E.g. “I saw 30% of deck X, so I made Y changes to help deal with deck X.” (change)
-
Showing off a deck you achieved legend with this season and wanting to share it without having to write a guide

I took the VS Burn Spell Mage list and made some modifications to get both 500 wins on Mage (starting around 390) and to legend this month. I had an insane win rate at the start and didn’t really hit a wall until around d5.
Removals:
heatwave (post miniset)
lightshow
reverberations
wisdom of norgannon
Additions:
jaina’s gift
malfunction (post miniset)
frost lich cross stitch
sunset volley
Heatwave was situationally strong on quick draw, but malfunction is just better I think. Often times the turn quick draw was active was not the turn you wanted heat wave to be played. Malfunction can better handle early-mid game boards and allow you to maintain board without needing to trade minions, resulting in more face damage. Lightshow is just not competitive, I am surprised VS is still entertaining it. Reverberations was typically a dead draw or took up hand space - not enough valuable targets for this. Wisdom isn’t necessary imo.
Jaina’s gift is sleeper really strong, people don’t play around this card or expect an additional 3-6 damage from hand. It won so many of my games. Frost lich cross stitch is just very strong, especially with the weapon in play. Freezing opponents face was very valuable pre-miniset, even after the update opponents are generally afraid of the water elemental and will waste resources dealing with it. Sunset volley is extremely strong on turn 6 but serviceable on turn 9 especially with weapon equipped. I tried elemental inspiration in its place at one point, but ultimately sunset volley felt better as the one big spell in the deck.
Mulligan:
Very straightforward - keep weapon, 4 mana spells (not fireball), 5 mana spell on coin (can keep off coin in slower matchups). I will keep malfunction or flame geyser against aggressive decks. Ditch pretty much everything else - sometimes keep elemental companion with weapon.
Key Matchups:
Warlock: pain lock is favored, very very important to count damage from hand because they just kill themselves pretty quick. Control board until they are in lethal range. Insanity lock is very unfavored, this is for sure the worst matchup imo. They have access to healing, burn, and make big boards. Popgar usually ends games for them.
Hunter: secret hunter is winnable but annoying as always - difficult matchup nonetheless.
Paladin: buff paladin is easier because of access to freeze, getting water elemental on board to prevent the weapon buffs is key. Aggro paladin is all about board control - this is a neutral matchup. If they get the aura online with 2-3 minions on board you will lose. Do not go wide in this matchup.
Warrior: pre patch coin branns were majority of my losses (how did they always have brann on turn 5!?). Post patch this is a free win.
Other classes: I would say pretty heavily favored, the only tough matchup can be excavate rogue because of all the random cards they generate it is difficult to play around.
I genuinely think this deck has a place in the meta. If you like burn strategies it isn’t uncommon to be throwing 20+ damage from hand by turns 7-8. Always be counting your damage. Don’t use star gazing until you have at least 4 mana - it will always draw glyph or malfunction. Knowing when to play star gazing is important for matchups. Similarly void scripture was primarily a panic button to search for board answers. Typically would play it at 8+ mana hoping to find blizzard, yogg in the box, flamestrike, etc. Sometimes manufacturing error on 5 is not the play and that is a hard pill to swallow as the “fun” card of the deck.

Highlander priest has actually been working pretty well and it’s easily the most fun deck to play right now. It generally beats other Highlander decks pretty hard because you can copy other Highlander rewards with puppet theater.
Don’t sleep on hidden gem, some decks just hand no answer to it and it will literally heal for 10-20 hp over the course of the game and activate overheals
Do you have a list? I have a homebrew that's working okay but I'm interested in the overheals you're talking about
It doesn’t have that many overheals but ones that are pretty easy to generically activate. I’m considering trying a list that leans into it more though. Hidden gem really has been good though. You can have some really funny starts with gem and synchronize, most decks will struggle to kill you through 4hp healing per turn that they can’t interact with.

Having a ton of success with Aggro Naga Demon Hunter, got me to legend easily and 80% winrate through 20 games since hitting legend. This deck is both and aggro deck and a miracle deck. Blindeye Sharpshooter is just Auctioneer on steroids and Sock Puppet Slitherspear is a 1 drop that can easily do 10 damage if left on the board.

Reno Warrior only dropped 2 games from D3 to legend. Still good.
I've been way too stubbornly tweaking, scrapping, rebuilding the Mech and Bomb Warrior archetypes in all sort of shapes and forms and running several packages, but it's just not coming together. At this point I'm wondering if I'm just bad or if the deck itself is just really bad. Whatever it is, I'm kinda burnt out due to it for like the last 5-6 days exclusively
I've found some dust I had hidden away in old Golden Cards recently (about 10K worth). I knew it was a good idea to keep them :D
I've have finally upgraded a few of my decks from almost meta to fully meta
I've got Fizzle and Symphony for my Warlock decks now.
I've been hoping between Fatigue, Pain, Sludge and a Tempo List that someone posted around here.
Been stuck in D5-D3 for a while. I'm sure my bouncing around decks isn't Helping but I've been having fun.
UPDATE:
I've hit legend with a painlock deck inspired by this post: Painlock: Thoughts After 100 Games in Legend
Picked up the overheal priest from that one crazy chineese guy who seems to only play that deck since exp hit cause i only see that from him on donkey.top and didnt lose a game yet lol. Take this with a grain of salt thou because its wierd deck to play you can try it and go 0-10 if you dont know what you are doing or have bad luck.
What list are you playing? I see several different iterations on donkey
Nohands put out a video on Gaslight rogue a few hours ago and it's literally all I'm seeing at D1 now lol.

I did get to legend today, with two decks, i use Painlock to get from D5 to D3 and then switch to Odyn Warrior from D3 to Legend, the control warrior deck with duplicates just crushes aggro, and destroy mages.
Here's the Warrior list, i'm not gonna post the Painlock, because it's just the traditional list with the 2 new cards from the mini-set.

I wasn't ever sure why people instantly dropped odyn ctrl. Good to see it getting used again.
I have almost all the cards for this. I might try it out.
Can I ask about a few card choices?
Why only 1 copy of Aftershocks?
is it not good enough to warrant putting 2 in?
What do you normally try to fizzle? Armor cards? Ignis? Removal?
Don't have Boom and I'm not sure I want to craft him.
What would be a good replacement?
Alright, i only use one aftershock because of the amount of aoe this deck already has, fizzle i usually use to armor cards, boom is not super essential, usually one zilliax against aggro do the job
Fuck yeah , gonna try this
Tried it. Instantly queued into a reno DH still running quartzrite crusher lol. That was enough for me. Obviously a rarity, but I had only switched decks to hopefully disrupt my pocket meta full of painlocks in the first place. One match seemed to do the trick.
Just went 14-4 with a Dragon Drum Druid (lost two games against crescendos). It feels like an alternate Hybrid Druid but going with tall boards and a shit ton of refill with Beanstalk. Dragons help a lot with ramp and stabilization through taunts, lifesteal and draw. Treants are here to make sure you have around 5 waves of minions and constant aggression.
List below. Edit : climbed to 2500 legend.
Edit 2 : switched Aerosoilizer for Cactus construct to help with early game aggro and get some value (or whelp). Score is now 23-11.
Not sure how you went 14-4 with it, tried to make it work but it is just not enough. Super frustrating to play. You wait for the Disciple - Drum combo, sometimes can even top it off with cultivation just to get it board cleared. Even if you pull it of a second time, it will get cleared and is simply not enough. No other win condition. No way of dealing with huge minions like 14/14s and stuff you see all the time, only damage besides minions to the other board is the temporary swipe and Gemtosser.
Dragons way too few, inconsistent. That's why some Hybrid even dropped the Dragon package. Either all in or nah.
Beanstalk is nice, but it is overall way too slow to get real value out of it. And what for? There is no win condition besides the 5x huge taunt board which is simply not enough. Cool idea, but nope.
It feels incredibly weak and I gave up after 10 games (2-8). Went back to pure Dragon Druid (29-17) and I do no longer have the urge to uninstall the game and throw my PC out of the fckn window.
Regret that I crafted the Disciple for this. Power Level F Tier. Sorry.
/edit: in before "skill issue" / "get gud"
So sorry you had to craft Disciple for this. I agree my winrate tanked after, especially against Warrior and Warlock. And I tested the full dragon Druid which felt a bit better.
But without ultra (and tall) aggro and highlander warrior I believe there's some space for this deck. The flood, the big wall, the boosting and the cycling feel good. Again sorry for your losses.
It's all good, cool idea, wanted to try it. Saw another variant in the new VS report which looks a bit more promising. Will try that one. Currently having a blast with Highlander Druid, if you survive perfect draw aggro decks you out value every other late game deck. Incredible. Had 2 Yogg Sarons and one Lifebinder on the board once, it was ridiculous. Didn't even draw purified dragon nest, had Aviana still in hand.. so many win conditions. It's also in the new VS report. Give it a swing, it's a blast.
Yeah highlander seems really fun, maybe I'll give it a try. I saw Vs treants list but I'm not sure it's better than mine. I tested a lot of variants and most run out of gas too early or brick. I hope I'm wrong tho cause I really like this deck.
Do you think this list is worth running without Fye?
Just for trying out I mean.
Yes it should be fine
Interesting list
Thanks!
You're welcome!

Buff paladin seems busted. Been climbing with Reno hunter beating or at least competing with most decks. Buff paladin can't even make a dent.
I just lost three in a row to deathrattle mech warrior, painlock and reno hunter playing buff paladin, dropping from D2 2 stars back to D3. I had previously had a lot of success with it, but it is by no means unbeatable.
I think it's the lack of silence that irks me. It's pretty difficult to clear when it gets going! I have since changed my mind to painlock being the most painful deck cheating out so many stats so early
Reinstalled Hearthstone for the first time in over a year and went from bronze 10 to Legend with Zarimi Priest with a 71% winrate. Paladin and Warlock can feel pretty difficult because if they can bully you off the board there's not much you can do to stabilise reliably, but the deck generally feels very strong and well rounded and has a lot of late game reach with Zarimi and Leeroy. Also Aman'Thul feels completely busted lol.
Welcome back and congrats !
thank you!
When I wrote that comment initially I was jealous. I had been back for a month and a half, and I had finished Diamond 5 in the previous season. That's usually my cap without putting in tons of practice with 1 single deck.
But today after reading a guide on this sub about painlock, after I made some suggested card changes, focused harder on the aggro gameplan and I went from D4 to Legend in one sitting.
Maybe like 20 quick games.
Feels awesome :D
congrats! <3
You're welcome!
Saw owl Druid doing somewhat well on d0nkey and gave it a whirl. It feels the closest to real it ever has been, but that’s still probably closer to tier 3 than anything, but just the general existence of burn wins games vs pain lock

How has funnel cakes been ? I feel like innervate helps curve into your plays better, but haven’t played your version more of a version with freya so might be different
If this is that Dorian Owlonius list, the Funnel Cake is kind of a combopiece that is mean to be discounted by Lifebinder's Gift and then you can get 3 mana out of it on your combo turn.
I watched a video by Clark Hellscream about it just a few days ago.
Ooo freya is spicy with Dorian, probs too greedy but I’m tempted. Tbh an innervate is probably better there all around

What's working is the Elusive Rush Zilliax everybody is running now. Single-handedly wins every aggressive matchup. It's giving me ulcers, and pushing my tempo deck into the can.
Zilliax is by far the worst card for the game in my opinion right now, even moreso than Brann. It is so strong that it is literally a win condition on its own regardless of the deck that it's in. Would seriously love to see this card retired early or nerfed to make it more of a niche pick rather than an auto-include in literally every deck.
I'm not sure if it will be a nerf candidate but IMO if it is, it should have Elusive removed, or cost 9 mana (and maybe get 1 attack to compensate).
I don't mind that card, but when Warriors cheat it out on turn 4 with the 2 mana discount 5 card, and are guaranteed to summon at least 2 more on 8 (thanks to Reborn, and god forbid, 4 more post-Brann?), that's a little annoying to say the least.
I mean.. it's an 8 mana card. If that's what's stopping your aggro deck it's because you're not aggroing hard enough
An often unfair and repeated sentiment. Not every aggro deck HAS to win before a certain turn. Many have the ability to go into the late game and still win. Against a deck like Reno Warrior, most opponents will play as the aggressor.
The Zilliax in question, might as well be a full heal that can eat anywhere from 4-7 minions. Having said that, I'm not so much complaining as I am simply saying it is an incredibly strong and game-winning card against more aggressive strategies.
I had 3 games the other day, where that very card swung the game the turn I had them in kill-range, and I admit I was frustrated enough to say something about it, albeit without denouncing the card.
It's really good. It's super annoying to deal with.
I'm surprised no one thought of using it in this combination before this patch.
Brann warrior still absolutely wrecks. Going with a lower curve to deal with painlock now though.
Went ~75% winrate with plague excavate DK and new gheists. Pretty much the same core as usual except with gheists. I lifted the deck list from someone in here a few days ago and all I changed was moving zilliax from the 10 mana 4/5 rush "costs 1 less per minion on board" dude to the 9 mana 6/5 "battlecry: summon a copy of this" dude around diamond3 for more healing and a more solid later turn drop. It is pretty much the same as it was from patches ago except with gheists. Not having mining casualties as a 2 drop hurts a bit but having gheists and more AOE helps to cover the gap.

Mulligan:
vs aggro/flood things like Pally, mulligan for weapon and 1-2 aoe
mulligan for tempo is also good, especially if you can get like 2 excavate into the turn4 4 mana 3/3 guy that gives you a free excavate
for a longer game control matchup ditch the AOE and the removal cards and try to tempo out with excavates/discovers and/or try to get Helya
never keep anything in mulligan that is 5+ mana
=
Matchup-specific notes:
vs mage: I was losing to this more than other matchups, I started to realize how important it was to keep my health up and clear their minions. They have shitloads of removal but not as much burn/reach, so pressuring them while clearing out their minions and keeping your hp value high should let you win on eventuality. This is as opposed to leaving their stuff up and going face a lot.
vs warrior: never give them a good turn to drop an 8 mana brann. Play just enough that they need to clear and can't afford to use 8 mana for him. Gheists are amazing for this. Try to hold Reska for their Zilliax specifically so you can Reska+attack or Reska+cast removal at small minion hiding behind zilliax ---> steal their zilliax so they can't revive him easily with Dr Boom.
vs Reno: try to use gheists value to make boards just big enough that they have to use Reno. Dropping an 8 mana gheist right after a reno is also nice since it is a big fat 8/8 and the biggest natural singular threat in the deck to drop after a reno while still feeling okay about it (primus can't summon 3/3's into reno).
vs handbuff DK: tempo out then just adjust gameplan based on discovers. If you get things like reborn effects or more reskas or soulstealer/corpse explosion for example then you can afford to let them drag the game and take the board. Until you get cards like that, you need to keep playing for the board and making sure you never fall behind because otherwise they might drop something like 40/40 worth of stats on turn 8 randomly. So far it seems like the game ends up going long anyways due to them being able to drop big minions with lifesteal even if they get low, e.g. buffed up Seamstress or Hollow Hound w/ lifesteal cleave; if all goes well, you will have an early board, then they start taking board with their buffed minions, then eventually they will run out of gas and be at around 3 cards in hand or less for the rest of the game.
vs DK in general: Primus and Reska must always be played around. Avoid playing your Primus if you do not have a gameplan for what to do if they use their next turn to eat your primus with blood rune, or Reska your Primus.

Got legend with reno priest most games are winnable except wide early paladin blowoits (warlock is managable). New location is mvp (cloning internal and sherif against locks lmao). Control games are long and exhausting but thats the price fir playing prieet
I need the deck code :(
Can you share your deck code?
Do you mind sharing your deck?
I've been experimenting a little bit with reno Shaman, not really found a list that I like yet. I enjoy playing Shaman but the deck doesn't feel really strong , or maybe I'm playing it wrong. Im at d3-d2 eu
What beats paladin ? I bumped into a lot of em with little success. I'm pretty sure reno Shaman is supposed to be favored but I don't know I always got overwhelmed by their board and never really had enough clear.
Anybody playing anything that stomps pally?
Nothing really beats Flood paladin right now, it's near a 60% winrate which is absurd. Insanity Warlock does the best against it though. I love Reno Shaman but it will probably be Tier 3 at best once the meta settles since Reno Warrior is still very prevalent and very strong.
I actually managed to hit legend. One day I played ranked and literally never met a single pally I'm in the low 9k legend now enjoying my reno Shaman but yeah.. I wish it was a bit stronger
Excavate Rogue making an unexpectedly pleasant climb this month with 18-3 score. Deck seems really strong, although I faced 0 warlocks (somehow) so take the score with a pinch of salt.
