How many fans of the sport don’t have a favorite team?

Discussion

Being a Ducks fan has made me branch out so I can still enjoy this beautiful game through other avenues. I’ve been playing fantasy hockey for the last 5 years or so and it makes me root for specific players since I’ll end up watching a bunch of their games. It also helps me enjoy the playoffs because there are zero stakes.

Anyway, I was curious how many people that watch games ultimately never have a favorite team but rather one or a few players that they root for, that way if they don’t win in the playoffs it’s not as heartbreaking.

My dad and uncle don't have a favorite team anymore. They used to root for the Quebec Nordiques but after they moved they remained teamless. They still enjoy the sport and watch lots of games especially during playoffs but they don't mind who wins they just want to watch good hockey (and wish Quebec city gets a new team).

Hopefully Quebec City will get another NHL team at some point (and I say that as someone from/living in the U.S.). Similar to Winnipeg, it will always be a bit of an uphill battle for an NHL team there due to market size, and Quebec’s capital city has the added challenge of being primarily a French-speaking city (unlike more bilingual Montreal), which won’t appeal to many players.

I’m old enough to remember the Nordiques (I was in my early 20s when they moved to Denver) and I’d like to see a new version of the Nords in my lifetime. It probably won’t happen as long as Gary Bettman is the NHL Commissioner though.

The arena problem is resolved but the other issues I gotta give it to you. Another one is the dollar change rate. There are way more francophone fans of the Habs than anglophone so I hope this won't be a reason the NHL would use. Yeah there's a language barrier but fans will fill that arena and pay as much as they can. If the Stastny loved Quebec as their home during their career then I hope we can make players of every nationality welcome in the vieille capitale!

Also thanks for the good words pal!

Being an Australian fan, I don't have a strong attachment to any one specific NHL team. A few I like, a couple I don't, but no true stand out.

I do, however, have a favourite team in the local league.

Which ones do you like?

There are at least two of you.

Still salty about Gauthier?

I love San Jose for some reason

I had a favorite team. They now no longer exist

Lol. Yes. Ducks fan too.... But yeah I gotta cheer on someone else for the rest of hockey season. Honestly, I've loved the Golden Knights and The Kraken. I hate that freaking gila monster mascot though. Like wtf s that. The Kings are still pretty good, but I don't root for them out of principle. There's so many good teams out there especially eastern conference. But I haven't picked a team.... Predators are good .. man, hockey is great.

Don’t have a favorite NHL team. Started out watching hockey cheering on a friend’s kiddo at the Brick several years ago and was so amazed at how those 10 year olds played I got into watching minor hockey. Can’t believe that’s what made me a hockey fan, but it was so much fun. Really enjoy the WHL and like to see what’s happening with player and team stats in the NHL.

I think it’s interesting seeing what different guys are doing all over the NHL. Sort of like seeing all those kids from that Brick team we were cheering on getting drafted to the WHL this year. Few more years and I’ll get to see what some of those guys are doing in the NHL. Just incredible following these individual careers, I think.

Also, I think it’s neat to see how teams change and adapt when new players (and coaches) come and go. The team is a constantly changing beast. I like to see the change. I like to see the growth. I like to see it in all the teams.

I’m a Canucks fan but honestly I barely watch hockey anymore. I’m not sure what it is but I find myself caring less and less.

I’m a Kings fan. I usually don’t follow any team after the Kings have exited or not made the playoffs. But, I usually (not always) hope for an underdog team or a veteran who has never won a cup. If team that eliminated mine goes to the finals or wins then at least my team doesn’t look as bad. If the Kings aren’t in the playoffs- I just get on with life and enjoy my summer.

Fan of the players...Though if I lived in the same city as a team, that team would become my favorite, I am certain of it.

I’ve played hockey for 45 years. Coached for 25 years. Have 5 kids that have played or are playing. Personally know a couple nhl players.

I don’t give a $hit who wins or loses. I just love good hockey

I've never had a favorite team. I just love hockey. I'm happy to watch any team play any time I have time.

All of them with "who should I root for... What team should I pick?" Posts

Not for hockey but definitely in other sports.

I'm an Isles fan through and through, bad or good.

I’m a Blue Jackets fan but honestly I love watching any NHL game.

I’m a bigger fan of the game overall than I am of just my team, I even follow the AHL, ECHL, and Canadian Major Juniors leagues just because I like watching high quality hockey.

I follow multiple favorite goalies throughout the season just as much as I do the Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks.

I love watching the game. It’s fun cheering for the Stars and Canucks when they play, and seeing them win, but I mainly watch hockey because goalies are ninjas.

I feel like watching the NHL is much more fun when you do create that strong attachment to a team. You get the occasional highs and constant lows. Makes it that much sweeter if they do finally win it all.
