After the success of Denis Villeneuve's Dune, the makers are now working on a prequel series, Dune: Prophecy. The show will explore the origins of the influential Bene Gesserit sect, set 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides. While work is already underway on the project, a special casting has been announced. And it's none other than Bollywood diva Tabu joining the cast.
According to Variety, Tabu recently joined the cast of the Max Original series, marking her return to Hollywood after 12 long years. Previously, the actress featured in The Namesake (2006) and Life of Pi (2012).
The series said to have been originally commissioned in 2019, is inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. “Set within the expansive universe of ‘Dune,” created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit," the official tagline states, according to Variety.
Tabu is set to play the role of Sister Francesca, described as a “strong, intelligent, and alluring” character, who was once the love of the Emperor; however, she returns to strain the balance of power in the capital.
Apart from the Bollywood actress, the series also features stars like Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, Jodhi May as Empress Natalya, Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, and others in prominent roles.
The show is expected to have a late 2024 release.
Two Dune films, including the recent one in 2024, have been released so far. Close to ending its theatrical run, Dune: Part Two has already passed $700 million globally. A third film is presently in the works.
What's on the work front for Tabu?
Last seen in Rajesh A Krishnan's Crew, Tabu also has a couple of Indian films, including Neeraj Pandey's Auron Mein Kahan Dam Tha alongside Ajay Devgn, lined up for release. The film will be released on July 5.
